when they showed themselves for what they were. GHWB went into the 30%s, his son hit the 20%s after Katrina. Even Reagan went down from Iran/Contra.
But nothing seems to get Trump out of the 40 percentile. Not even the death of close to 100,000 Americans.
What is the explanation?

(15,510 posts)CNN poll today has him at 46%. I know they are not right-wing, but at the same time I don't believe he's at 46%. It's got to be landline users, who lean conservative.

(14,858 posts)... years ago that he lost all respect for Bush Sr. after he gave a speech that expressed empathy and compassion for all people.
I don't even recall the speech he cited now, but the fact that it bothered him told me a LOT about that asshole.

(52,387 posts)after katrina, the media didn't give shrub much positive coverage, or really much coverage at all. they didn't lambaste him as much as i would have liked, but they didn't continue to prop him up.
donnie *still* gets a ton of media attention. granted, he's an incumbent running for re-election in an election year, but, as with 2016, the coverage is *heavily* tilted in favor of the republican candidate. just look at the hours of airtime donnie gets vs. what biden gets. it's actually even worse than the little hillary got, if you can believe that.
fortunately, donnie's been a train wreck and couldn't make the simple and obvious political statements that would have turned his image around, and instead he just dug himself a hole and kept digging. but the media gave him every opportunity to create a new image as the uniting leader in a crisis.
still, no such thing as bad press, someone once said, so as long as they continue to spell his name right, there will continue to be a chunk of america that thinks if he's on the news all the time, he must be good....

(15,392 posts)Were capable of acting like adults to varying degrees. There was some point where each one, no matter what kind of dick they truly were, put a stopper on it. Trump doesn't have that, and it appeals to the lizard-brained out there that see his antics as owning the libs. As long as he's owning the libs, it doesn't matter because it fuels their hate-boners, which is the only kind of "joy" they're capable of feeling.

It is about playing to people's personality disorders.
People may change their minds, but they rarely change their personalities.

(15,510 posts)I mean the only issue he was unpopular with in 1992 was the economy. Sure, he wasn't a good president but he wasn't a 30% president either. His lowest point was even lower than W's lowest point. He had an incredible 60% drop. Young teenage Xers literally hated him in 1992.

(16,685 posts)The old "RINO" argument. Trump has something for everyone. The supposedly socially liberal aren't socially liberal enough to be appalled by him and they love dismantling government and the "deplorables" are over the moon.
