Grocery prices reach 50-year high amid pandemic

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, experts say grocery prices are higher than they have been in 50 years.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, "The food at home index increased sharply in April, rising 2.6 percent...its largest monthly increase since February 1974."

April grocery sales showed a 4% price increase for poultry, meat and fish.

Cereal, baked goods and non-alcoholic beverages saw a 2.9% price increase.

The highest price spike was eggs, with a 16% increase.

Overall, grocery prices increased 2.5%.

Experts say the price increase has to do with supply and demand. Americans are shopping at the grocery store more than ever thanks to stay-at-home orders.

Additionally, some of our county's largest meat suppliers are dealing with coronavirus spreading inside their facilities and have been forced to close.

I definitely am seeing an increase.

I went to King Soopers (Kroger), and there was lots of high-priced toilet paper, and they also had the store brand of Lysol-type wipes. I didn't need either. I noticed that even dish detergent was higher.

I've been seeing on here folks saying the toilet paper shortage is over in their areas. We still are having a shortage over here in Maine. At least when I went shopping last Wednesday there was no toilet paper in the stores. I guess I'll see if there is any later today, but I'm not expecting to see any.

Walmart doesn't have a limit, and their tp aisle was well stocked when I was last there. The price there was way less than that at King Soopers.

I think things are going to get ugly again, and I'm maintaining and replenishing my stock of everything. I really only buy things that I use anyway, and I rotate according to expiration dates. I did buy some canned goods, which I really don't normally eat, just because there may always be a natural disaster or something where refrigeration may be an issue.

I've always had the attitude that it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

They certainly do around here, but I stopped going to Walmart in early April when they instituted the limits of people inside the store, because the line to get in there is insane. You wait at least 45 minutes outside just to get in the store. We go to Hannaford now and we never have to wait to get in there. There was a small amount of toilet paper at Hannaford last night, which is an improvement from nothing for the past two months. Of course, there was a limit on one item per shopper. What they had was some pathetic 4 roll packs. I had never seen the brand before, but it seemed to be some brand out of Mexico. Something they wouldn't have normally stocked before. Seems like they are looking into different suppliers for toilet paper than they were using before. At least they are trying to do something to solve the problem. I was actually impressed I was able to buy some things I haven't been able to buy in a while. They had vegetable soup again. I haven't been able to buy vegetable soup in two months. They also had the pizza dough in those cylinders you pop (whatever that kind of package is called). I haven't been able to get those in a few weeks too. I bought a package of Wet Ones for my son's car (amazed they had those too). Overall, they were a lot better stocked last night than they have been in a while.

I think what we went through in April is either going to be repeated or be worse, so every time I go to the store, I replenish what I've used and get a few extra things. If I'm wrong, I'll be ecstatic.

yesterday. I was surprised we're still not caught up here, but fortunately I'm still stocked for a while.

It was easy to see BJs was spreading items out to make the store look fuller. The TP section was filled with bottled water cases.

I rush through the store as fast as I could. (I'm in a high risk category for the virus). I shop off a list and also grab items that I think I could use and throw them in my cart and rush out as fast as I could. I don't even look at prices now or comparison shop.

I think the stores are taking advantage of that and know that many people do as I do. Get in and get out and try not to catch the virus. So no sales are offered and one now needs to pay full price for an item or in some cases the prices have been raised.

Now I can understand that. These stores have had to incur all sorts of new costs of doing business. Installing plastic barriers at check-out. Taping the floors. Installing additional sanitizing stations. Sanitizing the store overnight so it is clean the next day of service. So I guess they are entitled to raising their prices.

When I get home from such a trip I'm all stressed out and my BP is up. To me it is a scary task that I wish I didn't have to do. I don't take advantage of ordering and picking items up. I guess I just don't trust the people that do the shopping for you. Tried it once and was very disappointed. Didn't get half the items that I wanted/needed. Some of the items I got were nearly out of date. So I rely on my going out to do the shopping.

I have often wished that I could lay some money on a stump and go get the groceries when the delivery person leaves, like in the movie, Nell. It is one of my biggest wishes, to be honest. I hate grocery shopping or any kind of shopping that involves being around people, THAT MUCH.

Yes, prices are outrageously higher for certain things and just higher than normal for other things. I haven't seen any meat in the Food Lion I usually go to since sometime in March. So, I couldn't tell anyone what those prices are. The keep having "MVP" sales on meat that isn't there when I finally break down and go. I despise it. I despise Walmart worse, but if I want TP and a few other things Food Lion just does NOT have any more, that is where I have to go. They used to ship TP, not now they INSIST you come to the store and get it. I despise that too. I'd rather have it delivered. They can still limit me online as easily as in person.

But, the last time I had to go to the Rockingham Walmart, one of the employees showed my receipt to a random other customer, because I had paid online. They asked how to do that, so the employee grabbed my receipt and showed it to the other customer. I wish her manager had been nearby so I could point that out to them. I don't want to catch this crap, so I just left. I was using the pickup option instead of going into the store. I have been watching my bank account ever since that to make sure they didn't get my debit card number. I cannot trust those idiots at Rockingham's Walmart. I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy. I wouldn't even recommend them to Stephen fucking Miller. They are THAT rude and horrible.

It is just boring and I can't wait for it to be over every time. I like my shopping trips to be as short as possible. I just can't stand being inside a box store for too long. I'd rather be outside.

My neighbor does the pickup thing, and she said that the produce was better than she would have picked out, which I though was a weird thing to say. I mean, why wouldn't you pick out good produce for yourself?

I think some of the stores may really be taking advantage of the situation. Those barriers really aren't a huge expense, and the tape isn't either. As far as sanitizing the store, well, maybe they should have always been doing that. They're dealing in a product we ingest, so I think the utmost care should be taken.

But I'm a clean-freak and somewhat of a germaphobe, so maybe I'm not the best judge on the topic.

Wait till repukes do something to get oil prices up.

I shopped about a month ago & found Krogers potatoes to be $7.50 for 3 lbs! Normal potatoes that had previously been around $3. Everything is way up.

There's Colonel, the big Buff Cochin rooster, and the hen, Mrs. Butterworth. Keanu, who is sometimes John Wick when he's bad. Julia, a beautiful greenish black, Amelia Earhart who flies around way too much, and so on. I even have 2 ROBs--Rotten Old Bitch. They are mean. I have way too many roosters, because I'm not about to slaughter them.

We also have ducks, and one goose (I particularly favor her eggs). The 3 Great Pyrenees get eggs for breakfast, and I have them too. There's not much surplus.

Of the 15 too many Muscovey ducks I posted about last month, I have sold 10 on Craigslist (they never had names). So now I get a paying farm discount at Tractor Supply!

and ask if they need eggs. Before this, I’d just bring a dozen into the office.now I call my siblings and my niece and my neighbor... or ask Dh to contact nearby coworkers.

I have 11 hens. One is too old to lay but there are days when I get 10. Eight per day is probably average, and that adds up fast.

My hens just die of old age, unless there is a serious illness that requires them being dispatched sooner.
