Breonna Taylor died but she wasn't target of investigation. Police had 'no-knock' warrant, records s

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Shooting victim Breonna Taylor was not the main target of the narcotics investigation that prompted Louisville police officers to enter her home unannounced March 13, police and court records show.

The Louisville Metro Police investigation, records show, was centered around a "trap house" more than 10 miles from Taylor's apartment and two suspects police believed were selling drugs.

Breonna Taylor's shooting death by Louisville police has raised questions about why police entered her home in the early morning hours of March 13 and opened fire on her in her apartment.

Police say that Taylor's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, fired first, wounding an officer. Walker says that he believed someone was breaking into the home and acted in self-defense.

Taylor, 26, was shot eight times by officers before being pronounced dead at the scene.

Maybe 'no-knock' warrants should be illegal for obvious reasons.

Consider this: The English crown during Colonial times would grant it's customs agents a "general warrant" allowing them to search any home or business for untaxed or contraband goods, but they could only use it during the day and only after they knocked to alert those inside that they were coming in. In response to this, Our Founders cited this as one of the reasons to take up arms and shoot other men down on the battlefield.

Meanwhile today, police can pull a warrant with garbage information, perform a military raid without knocking in the nighttime when a normal homeowner is asleep, and charge any homeowner who uses force with a crime. It's especially bad when one considers that people awoken from deep sleep will experience the adrenaline surge of the "fight or flight" response and may not be alert enough (grogginess from deep sleep) to properly assess the situation for decision making. However, in the legal world they are expected to perform flawlessly in their recognition of the situation while police mistakes or errors of judgement are forgiven "because the job is dangerous".
