Airlines were just warned for a second time by the government that they're required to issue refunds

The Department of Transportation issued its second warning in two months to airlines, prompting them to issue refunds to passengers whose flights have been canceled, according to a report by USA Today.

The DOT received an onslaught of complaints from customers during the months of March and April, with 25,000 calls compared to the monthly average of 1,500 calls, USA Today reported.

Airlines are reluctant to issue refunds during the coronavirus pandemic as travel rates plummeted 90% in the past several months during the outbreak, according to NPR.

But the DOT says passengers whose flights are canceled for a number of reasons, including a public health crisis, are eligible for refunds, even if they bought a baseline economy tickets, USA Today said in the report.

Interesting. I was supposed to go to a wedding last month in Arizona. My flight was cancelled due to COVID-19 but I'm told Alaska airlines issued me a voucher. The voucher supposedly has an expiration date but I've been unable to find out what it is.

My June 3 trip was Chicago to Brussels. United changed that to Chicago to London to Brussels, arriving 5 hours later than the original itinerary. United claims I can’t get a refund because they can get me to my destination within 6 hours of the original arrival time.

I quoted the DOT website and told them they added another flight, through another airport, and another country which means my original flight was cancelled and the additional flight was a significant change to my itinerary. They would not listen.

I booked on United because I wanted a direct flight. I’m furious with United and sent my congressional rep the details.

BTW, I had cancelled a flight on Delta weeks earlier and got a refund immediately with no questions asked.

She's not as mad about it as I am. She better get a refund, or I'll turn into Karen from Red Lobster.
