Just heard a good one from my neighbor.

Every time a hospital reports admission of a Covid 19 patient they automatically receive a check for $40,000 from "the guberment". This is in addition to any regular insurance or medicare payments.

So, the reason reported Covid 19 cases is so high is because hospitals are getting rich off of false reporting.

Because if it's a straightforward, garden-variety pneumonia that a person is admitted to the hospital for – if they're Medicare – typically, the diagnosis-related group lump sum payment would be $5,000. But if it's COVID-19 pneumonia, then it's $13,000, and if that COVID-19 pneumonia patient ends up on a ventilator, it goes up to $39,000."

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/04/24/fact-check-medicare-hospitals-paid-more-covid-19-patients-coronavirus/3000638001/

As explained by nurse Elizabeth Davis in her piece for verywellhealth.com, each hospital has a base payment rate assigned by Medicare. It takes into account nationwide and regional trends, including labor costs and varying health care resources in each market.

Then, each diagnosis-related group, which classifies various diagnoses into groups and subgroups, is assigned a weight based on the average amount of resources it takes to care for a patient. Those figures are multiplied to determine the payment from Medicare. A hospital in one city and state may be paid more or less for treating a patient than a hospital in another.

I added bold and italics for emphasis.

In other words they are using a pre-approved formula. I would imagine that by the time they are put on a ventilator it has been established beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are COVID-19 patients.

Response: No idea but probably from the IRS.

I just smiled and changed the subject.

This is the same neighbor that has told me more than once that Obama built FEMA Camps all over the country to imprison members of the NRA. Also, that Obama planned to declare Martial Law so he would not have to leave office in 2016.

What an endless source of entertainment.

He was wrong about those FEMA camps though. That is where they are going to throw all the people who refuse the COVID-19 vaccination (actually a chip) after they confiscate your guns and property. I actually heard that one recently.

that hospitals are often paid based upon patient’s diagnosis. Medicare, Medicaid, and some private insurers pay based upon diagnosis. They get paid more for bacterial pneumonia than viral pneumonia, as an example.

I suspect payments for CV19 are a lot more than many short-term admissions. Hospitals spend a good bit of money to look for reasons to bill for higher paying diagnoses and they can bill as "suspected" diseases. But, they have to be careful in fudging diagnoses, too. Medicare and insurers spend big money auditing them to prevent fraud/abuse.

But, none of that changes the fact the right wing rube is full of BS.

He also said a distant relative is suing to get an uncle's death certificate changed from COVID-19 to COPD (which he also had), after he died at around 80 years old.
There was also some claim about hospitals getting extra $ if hospitals add COVID to a death certificate.
Next time, I need to ask where he gets his 'news'.

With dozens of Covid patients. They had to build isolation units to contain the virus. They are getting reimbursed more, since they have dedicated staff on that unit. But not $40,000....

say the hospitals make so much for calling everyone a covid patient that they shut down the rest of the hospital. As of yesterday my hotspot had 22 deaths in county over 12% of cases.

I would say that if we had nationalized healthcare that covered everyone & gave hospitals the resources they need to treat patients, this wouldn't be happening ... so you support nationalized healthcare, right?

I'm not sure that's really true but they probably believe a lot of crap on Fox that isn't true, so fair game. Just mess with their mind a bit.
