Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWhat would happen if you accidentally washed your 1200 check in the laundry?
I mean, hypothetically?
And who would you call or write to get it replaced, and how long would that take do you think?
Asking for a friend.
I really am.

(17,500 posts)This year's return is not a factor.
There may be some avenue to get a replacement, but right now it appears the IRS isn't answering phones or responding to mail. Sorry.

However, I don't think you should count on it.

(1,549 posts)If the routing and account numbers, your name and amount are readable, a bank may still accept it. I once had a check mangled by mail processing equipment, and taped enough of it together that the bank took it.
If not, call the IRS and explain what happened and see what needs to be done to get a replacement.

(17,724 posts)I have washed checks before and they always survived maybe a little blurry and maybe a chunk or two missing but never just completely straight up disintegrated.
For this reason I maintain that it wasnt in that pocket at all
Hes pretty mad though

(4,533 posts)I used to answer IRS phones in school lots of checks get stolen from mail boxes, or sent to the wrong address. The IRS first checks to see ifvthe check was cashed. If not you sign a statement under penalty of perjury and they send you a new one. If it was cashed you have to swear its not your signature and fill out forms.

(4,533 posts)The IRS has never sent out so many checks. And they are delaying all kinds of other work. So they may run months behind in getting out replacements for lost, stolen or washed in the laundry checks.
