President Trump said Thursday the United States would not shut down in the case of a second coronavirus wave.
"People say that's a very distinct possibility. It's standard. And we're going to put out the fires. We're not going to close the country. We're going to put out the fires," Trump told reporters during a tour of a Ford manufacturing plant in Ypsilanti, Mich., when asked if he was concerned about a second wave of COVID-19.
Trump expressed confidence in the country's ability to contain future outbreaks, referring to them as "embers."
"Whether it's an ember or a flame, we're going to put it out. But we're not closing our country," the president continued.

It's up to the states to decide not him. Besides I doubt he'll still be president.

(11,934 posts)Hopefully it will hold off long enough, although if it follows in the steps of the 1918, we'll be seeing it start to escalate in October/November. The way some of the states are playing it, it may even be before that.

(5,131 posts)What he has to say will not matter much by that time. I trust that our governors and mayors are thinking ahead and strategizing how to handle resurgence in the Fall. We know he'll be petty as hell as a lame duck president.

(12,712 posts)He is just projecting something based on his campaign ambitions, which seem to be all he is ever really concerned about, (ratings).
If the second wave is bad, and it could be with all this equivocating, premature opening, protesting in groups, etc., then it won't be a choice for things to close down, it will be a priority.
Again, as I have said, it is not some door he can open or close at all, the states will deal with it and the Federal Government will confuse, mess up and abandon the efforts, as before. Trump is totally worthless and even a bane in a crisis. We all know that as a fact.

A very thin silver lining on a hurricane-sized dark cloud of death and destruction.

(63,221 posts)Nobody is going to defer to him during a second wave. He has proven that he is incapable of handling a crisis of this magnitude. We are on our own. The states are on their own.
