(37,163 posts)David Gregory was just as bad, and Tim Russert's tenure wasn't quite as hot as people who choose to dwell on their fonder memories of him seem to think. Russert's the guy who ushered in its current vapified form.

(33,509 posts)I remember Russert and Clinton and Bosnia. Your term, "vapified", fits very well.
Maybe that's why I don't remember Gregory at all -- Russert was so bad.

(297,866 posts)it was decent, JHB.. as in reality based.. not Gaslighting Gotcha?

(37,163 posts)Mind you, I was a kid in the 70s and in college in the 80s. I think I watched it a few times back then because of one or another guest, but I was never a regular viewer. But I have watched clips and the occasional full shows from the B&W era, and it was a whole different world.
Perusing Wikipedia for where to poke around to fill in the gap, between 1984 and 1991 it was struggling against competing political talk shows and went through a series of different hosts (including Chris Wallace for a year, '87-'88, who I think is the only left one not retired or deceased), whereas previously hosts had been fairly long-term and provided a steady hand. The hosts/panel moderators from early on through this meandering period came from journalistic backgrounds.
Russert, on the other hand, spent his pre-NBC career, which was about 12 years, working in various roles for Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Mario Cuomo. NBC hired him as Washington bureau chief in 1989, and he took over Meet The Press only 2 years later in 1991. Under him, it switched from a half-hour to full hour. For the next 17 years until he died, it was his baby.
So there was a situation where the show was struggling and needed some updating, had more time to fill, a guy whose main background, connections, and way of thinking was more political than journalistic, and it became his personal fiefdom.
If that's not a formula for encouraging crapola, especially in the 1990s media environment, I don't know what is.

(297,866 posts)I didn't start watching politics until 1999 and stopped in November 2002. I saw what was going on with the US media.. and it's only gotten worse.

(47,678 posts)And check out the comments!
Here's just a couple:
Dan Pfeiffer: "Coverage of Biden making a gaffe and apologizing is 100x coverage of Trump making a worse gaffe and not apologizing."
Paul Krugman: "Has anyone pointed out that Biden is capable of admitting error? That by itself puts him on a higher moral plane than you know who."

I hate when the gaslighting takes on a life of its own.
Thank You!
that all the comments I read were like that. Doesn't happen too often, which is why I usually don't read comments.

(297,866 posts)speaking out!
Of course the m$m is trying to make it a horserace.. they learned nothing from 2016
AND they know what they did in 2016, many expressing their regrets, yet they turn around and start doing it again. It is like they just can't help themselves. They spent most of the day covering one comment Biden made about black voters. Flashback to four years ago. They are Hillarying Joe!

I want to read Symone's book "No, You Shut Up."
Cha
(297,866 posts)I remember that now. Such a fool and obviously has no remorse about being a troll.
I didn't know about Symone's book.. I bet that is an excellent read.
