He's going to run away like a coward.

(60,010 posts)His entire purpose and focus in life is being the end all and be all of the Aryan race, the King of everything, the all powerful who makes entire nations pay attention to him.
He may be scared of losing..well, he IS scared of losing most everything, internally, but externally it is a necessary challenge every day to emerge a winner, if only in his increasingly fragmenting fantasy world.

He could feign an illness and bail, knowing that Pence will not win the election and take 2020 as a GOP loss.
I don't know if blanket pardons are legal, for crimes known and yet to be discovered.
===
Of course, if he does not run, the down-ballot GOP elections will really suffer more than ever.

(10,083 posts)he was installed in office, I always thought he would fake some medical reason, but that was before we knew about all his crimes. He may well ask Pence to pardon him and run and it will be too late for the repubs to recover.
And when he finally realizes he can't win , he'll drop out at the last minute to hurt the republican Party while claiming they didn't support and praise him enough. He is likely already looking at ways to hurt this country and the American people for his revenge for not giving him all their support. He's always been a vindictive arrogant spoiled little brat when things don't go his way. This lunatic is capable of doing anything.

(10,279 posts)acknowledge that his campaign is hopeless and will resign. It will be the ultimate screwing of his henchmen who failed him. Utter confusion among the remaining leadership. Trump will flee to eastern Europe in a vain attempt to find Malaria, but she will successfully dodge him.

I tried to find it in my bookmarks, but the following is the closest thing that showed up in a search, and it doesn't give a time:

(63,221 posts)He is not a healthy man, physically speaking, and his mental health is deteriorating rapidly. There are still 5 1/2 months left to go. It would be a miracle if he was taken out by no choice of his own, but it could happen. His precious economy is not going to bounce back in time and I don't think this virus is going to go away so easily either.

(12,601 posts)Uh, I mean "serve." He'll pull out of the race at the last minute, after the Republican convention. He'll want to get that last adrenaline rush he gets from his rallies before he blames Obama for forcing him out.
That will give the Repugs very little time to find a new nominee, especially since Fat Donnie hasn't been grooming anyone to replace him, and all the Republican senators have mud on the hands from the impeachment.

(7,546 posts)Not a psychologist but fear of humiliation is a primary driver for them. I feel this drives his need to blame others for his failures. Coupled with having lived a life where he has never had to answer to anyone he could find the pressure of continued derision to be too much to take.

(3,145 posts)Trump can handle a loss. He'll simply blame others for it like Dems, voter fraud and so on like he has been every time one of his policy proposals gets shut down. I predict his base will stand by him.
What Trump would be unable to stomach is declining to run for re-election or, worse, resigning the presidency. Both of those would be akin to admitting he's a failure and his ginormous ego just couldn't tolerate that.
GopherGal
(2,010 posts)but I think that's the appeal of some sort of medical "out". Gives him a way to save face. He's not quitting because he's losing, he's quitting because heart issues blah blah blah.
But then I worry about his delusional "healthiest president ever" narrative. Does he have too much invested in that to take this out.

(7,437 posts)He walks away before the bell tolls.
He's done stuff like this all along. He settles lawsuits when it looks like he'll lose, even if he repeated that he'll NEVER settle.
If Trumpy knows he'll lose, he's capable of doing a number of things, all of which will fail. He's already cooked his own goose. So he'll try to pull off a high risk maneuver, like declaring a national emergency to buy a little more time, but the emergency will give him the authority to cancel the election on "national security" grounds. If he thinks that he can't pull this off, he'll resign and get Pence to pardon him.
And the entire GOP will just stand in silence. They likely keep wondering why they signed up to follow this clown, but here they are. The next election, if common sense prevails, will be a bloodbath for the GOP. That's a big "if".

(26,117 posts)Putin could really ratchet up the chaos with Trump resigning that close to the election.
Question is, does Putin want to continue the money flow, and has he gotten everything else reversed he wanted.

(27,820 posts)It seems his handlers have finally gotten through to him about his failing numbers.
Case in point: Had anyone told him six months ago that he was losing the Evangelicals, he would have laughed it off as nonsense but now hes screaming about churches being opened, obviously in hopes of winning back their support. So hes now taking those numbers seriously.
The threat of looming lawsuits doesnt matter if he accepts the fact that hes losing. If he resigns this summer or is ousted in November, hes facing those suits either way.
If he is facing the probability that hell lose in a humiliating landslide, hell opt for walking away before that happens. Then hell send out hundreds of tweets about how he was a shoe-in for a second term had he chosen to stay in the race.
As someone said upthread, hell do it at a time that screws the GOP the most a final fuck-you to the party that he undoubtedly blames for his sagging poll numbers.

(34,857 posts)We're playing the same game we played in 2016 - he'll bow out because he doesn't want to lose.
Yet he didn't. He stayed in and won.
Even when it looked like he'd lose, his ego didn't allow for him to drop out.
But I think Trump has convinced himself he will win in November. Because of that, why would he drop out?

(21,823 posts)The Courts? They may schedule a preliminary hearing next April, maybe listen to arguments in October 2021. And if Trump loses, he merely appeals, and keeps it rolling for years. But how will the Courts address a hypothetical election in which Trump is down 20 points in the polls, but wins the "vote count" by 12 points?
Congress? Even the most optimistic election outcome this year will leave the Republicans with enough votes in the Senate to block almost anything. And they will use those votes standing in lockstep.
The Voters? I hope to hell, but folk are being targeted very specifically with the latest "persuasive" technology. These data brokers have information on individuals in over 2000 categories. Health, religion, brand preference, your porn choices, your associates. They know you better than you know your self.
Trump's a gambler. he goes with his gut. He will go for the big score. It's not out of reach, yet.
He thinks he can fix anything.
