Twitter Apologizes for 'Pain' Caused by Trump's Tweets, but Takes No Action

The thread title had to shorten the full headline from Variety:

Twitter Apologizes for ‘Pain’ Caused by Trump’s Tweets Falsely Implying Joe Scarborough Committed Murder, but Takes No Action Against President

https://variety.com/2020/digital/news/twitter-apology-donald-trump-false-joe-scarborough-murder-1234616060/

Twitter issued a public apology to the family of a woman whom Donald Trump has repeatedly insinuated in tweets may have been murdered by MSNBC host Joe Scarborough.

But for now, the social network isn’t taking any actions against Trump’s account or the offending tweets on the subject.

-snip-

“We are deeply sorry about the pain these statements, and the attention they are drawing, are causing the family,” a Twitter spokesperson said in a statement to Variety. “We’ve been working to expand existing product features and policies so we can more effectively address things like this going forward, and we hope to have those changes in place shortly.”

Twitter already has rules in place banning bullying and harassment. The company grants special exemptions to Donald Trump and other political figures for tweets that would be violations for regular users, if Twitter deems those posts in the “public interest.” Twitter last year put into place a policy under which tweets by political figures that violate its regular policies would be displayed with a warning notice in front of tweets — but to date, it hasn’t applied those warnings to any of Trump’s posts.

Twitter is basically saying that while they admit that Trump's tweets were repugnant, they're still not going to do anything about it.

Effing seriously? What on earth is wrong with, "you have violated the terms of service and your account has been deactivated"? What in the ever loving fark is wrong with people? It isn't this mofo difficult. Just delete his god damn account. There is nothing "political" or of "public interest" in slanderous comments. Christ on crack, the world is over.

It's has to come down to this for Twitter to do anything.
They know for now that none of us are leaving.
That truthfully, we are not standing up for our own beliefs... in numbers that matter to them.
Perhaps it's time for a serious movement?
What if the fair-minded with massive followings - celebrities, politicians,
business mavens, etc - left Twitter en masse?

Trump is counting on good people to not organize.

And, though we have the total power and authority to stop the pain right now, this minute, we're not going to do that, because your pain is in the public interest (we don't have to explain that to the likes of you), and it makes money for Jack Dorsey.

Get the message, proles?

A lawsuit against Twitter for knowingly spreading false and defamatory information which it admits is causing pain and suffering. This would be filed by the family of this unfortunate woman. If I knowingly use what resources I have to spread absolute lies which I know will cause someone intense emotional pain, aren't I liable to a slander or libel suit?

And a lawsuit against Trump for the same, filed by Scarborough. Granted, Scarborough is a public figure, but if he can prove financial damages (advertisers backing out, speaking engagements cancelled) as well as personal injury, shouldn't he be able to take this to court?

The Supreme Court allowed at least one lawsuit to proceed against President Clinton, even though he was still in office.
