Rep. Clyburn on The View says Biden's 'ain't black' comment made him 'cringe'

South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn weighed in on presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden suggesting that African American voters who support Trump “ain’t black,” saying he “cringed” when he heard the comments.
“I cringed, no question about that,” Clyburn said in an interview with “The View” Tuesday morning.

"In this instance, Joe did not do as well as I hoped in responding, but I will say this, I go about my business every day comparing Joe Biden, to the alternative, not the Almighty. He is not a perfect person. None of us are. So what my decision now is to determine who I feel should be the next president of the United States, and I do that by comparing the candidates to each other, not to the Almighty,” Clyburn said.

“I know him, and he knows me. He knows the African American community very well. I've done a lot of stuff for Joe Biden over the years, and I would not have supported him if I did not think that he was best suited to be the next president of the United States. It's just that simple,” Clyburn continued. Biden’s comments perhaps put a new pressure on Biden to select a woman of color as his running mate for the November election.

Biden came under fire Friday for comments he made during an interview in which he quipped that if African American voters support President Trump over him in November, they aren’t “black.” "Well, I’ll tell you what, if you have a problem figuring out whether you're for me or Trump, then you ain't black," Biden told radio personality Charlamagne tha God, who hosts the program, which is particularly popular among black millennials, a voting bloc the former vice president is hoping to woo.

That person isn’t black.

Or brown.

To be fair, a white person could “need more information,” now, because Trumps not leading a war against them, but anyone else? Nope.

If you’re not sure who to vote for, you ain’t LGBTQ+ . You ain’t black. You ain’t Latino/Latina. Because if you are black, Latino/Latina, LGBTQ+ or anything other than lily white, then you don’t need any more information.

of whether someone is "black". It's not a matter of needing more information--it's a matter of staying in your lane. Black people can decide for themselves what qualifies as black. White (extremely) privileged people don't need to be making that decision.

No one's making a decision. It's just a fact.

The sky is blue. Grass is green. Water is wet. If you don't have enough information to decide on your vote then you are obviously not a black person in the USA.

“Turn?”

Why would anyone change color?

It’s simply a fact that a black/brown/lgbtq+/anything other than cis-white in America don’t need any more questions answered.

What they do with the information is up to them. But if you need more info now, you are NOT a black/brown/lgbtq+ person in America today. Period.

Biden was 100% right in what he said. Truth is cringey sometimes. More cringey though are the deliberate attempts to obfuscate, confuse, and denigrate our party’s nominee for president in 2020. Much more cringey.

...and if they aren't black anymore according to you and Biden I was just wondering what color they are then...seems like a simple question.

Personally I find a white person like Biden telling black people when and when not they can be considered black a bad idea. ymmv.

It seems like you are very deliberately misinterpreting Biden’s remark. The amount of effort you are putting in to misinterpret what he said would make a Fox newscaster proud.

If you’re into simple questions:

Why are you working so hard to carry water for Trump and republicans?

Just a question. A simple question. That’s all.

Speaking of simplicity:

It’s a simple fact that a Black person in America has all the info they need to know who to vote for. If you’re a person who doesn’t have enough info to know who to vote for, then you. are. not. a. Black. person. in. America. today. Period.

And my response has nothing to do with "carrying water for Trump"

Lots of Democratic party members though it was very tone deaf. Running for President does not shield you from your actions or words.

Keep pumping Trump and GOP talking points all you like.

I cannot know your motivation. All I can know is that you are deliberately (At this point it must be deliberate) misinterpreting the Democratic candidate for president to cast him in a poor light.

At this point in time, if you are black, if you are brown, if you are LGBTQ+, if you are anything but straight-cis-lilly-white, then you know all you need to know to vote. That is just a fact. It’s possible for a straight white person to maybe not have enough info to cast their vote. But no one else.

As someone smarter and funnier than me said:

Voting this year is like being on an airplane, and the flight attendant tells you that your meal choices are fish, or a bowl of reheated diarrhea. No Black person in America needs to ask how the fish was cooked.

They may still order the diarrhea, but it wasn’t because they needed more information about the fish. Period.

Death Count Donnie fucks up royal on the pandemic, all the criminal activity, etc etc. and Biden has a dumb argument about race, which no one ever wins that race? It's one race: human and geeez that's not so good, I kind wish I was a puma at times, but then Jr. would probably pay to shoot me knowing my luck.

Sometimes people only read the headline. It gives a skewed impression. I saw the show. Clyburn said he had done things like that, joked with Whoopie about her having made comments and done things that came back to haunt her as times changed, that Charlemagne and Joe were both his friends and it matters how you vote.

It won't be the last time that Biden says something that will be construed as a gaffe, though he is often saying something that many people agree with. I hear people complaining all the time that politicians don't say what they really mean, that they are scripted and phony, but when a truly authentic politician comes along, he/she gets raked over the coals for being forthright. You can't have it both ways.

When a person is in the public eye all the time, it is inevitable that someone, somewhere will be offended by something that is said. There are times when it is appropriate to clarify what you mean or apologize, but constantly apologizing is not a good look for a leader. You really can't please all the people all the time. This was something that occasionally turned me off when Hillary was running. I really wanted her to push back more often. Republicans use the incessant apologizing against Democrats. Time to shift gears.

All that said, some of my favorite politicians have said things I don't agree with, but I don't expect them to try to please me with every word they speak. I would rather have an honest leader, who occasionally might be inartful, than someone who constantly lies and deceives.

He needs to chill and just let Trump lose the race with his evil and insanity.

When Biden tries to be too complex he says stupid things like that.

Just speak useful simple platitudes and let Trump destroy himself.
