BBC article: Masks that could help deaf and hard of hearing people read lips

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-52764355

"It's now part of daily life for many of us - struggling to work out what someone in a supermarket or at work is saying when they're wearing a face mask.

"But for people who are deaf or have hearing loss, masks can prevent them understanding anything at all.

"'You might as well be speaking in French,' says Fizz Izagaren, a paediatric doctor in the UK who has been profoundly deaf since the age of two.

"'I can hear one or two words but it's random, it makes no sense… When someone is wearing a face mask I've lost the ability to lip read and I've lost facial expressions - I have lost the key things that make a sentence.'"

being said.

All I can recommend is speak louder please.

I had one friend who knew I was hard of hearing, and he said something, and I couldn't understand him. He then quickly flipped his mask up a little so I could read his lips (we were still positioned at a safe distance apart) ... it was really nice of him, but I don't want to put others in harms' way.

Just speak up more louder and have a little patience, for those of us who are hard of hearing. If you have to yell, go ahead, I'll tell you if and when I finally can understand you.

Thanks so much!!!

..talk to her while masked is a totally futile endeavor, for her and for me. Speaking louder doesn’t help much.

She is in a 55+ senior living facility, and all visitors must wear masks, so I do..
