Consider this. 90,000 people have already died from Coronavirus. 90% of those deaths are needless. Thats 80,000 needless deaths. Growing at a rate of about 7K per week. What on earth? That is a human tragedy without modern parallel. In the American context, 3000 people died on 9/11. But the scale of Coronavirus or what its been allowed to become dwarfs that. The death rate has slowed a little bit not nearly enough but some ways. Reopening the economy will cause the death rate to spike upwards again, as infections grow.
The White Houses own estimate is a death toll of about 200,000. Thats nightmarish enough to have to write. But its based on a predictable slowdown in the pandemic. Reopening the economy now wont cause a slowdown, but an explosion. That ultimate death toll will climb upwards.
Worse, the pandemic will last longer, too, now that the infection has spread. So now we have a higher death toll, and a longer pandemic. Put those two together, and youre easily at between 300,000 to half a million dead.
--snip--
The only reference we really have for such numbers is if a nuclear bomb was dropped on America. Coronavirus is about to go nuclear. But the ironic twist in this case is that its a lunatic American President whos dropping the equivalent of a nuclear bomb, and the governors, flunkies, minions, and bleach-drinking fools wholl happily stand at ground zero and grin up at it for him.
--snip--
Mass death on a needless scale. Its something that shocks the rest of the world. Everyone I know whos not American is horrified by that but not just by that. Also by what seems to be Americas shrugging indifference to it. I tell them that Americas a country which became desensitized to needless mass death and now its paying the price. What else was endless war? What else was average people having no healthcare? Being made to work to the bone till the day you died, more or less? All these things are forms of violence, too and American society has been among the most brutal and cruel on earth for many years now. Its indifference to hundreds of thousands of needlessly dead during a pandemic hey, at least I got my beer! is the most American thing of all, perhaps.

(22,183 posts)distancing guidelines, defy common sense behaviors to slow the spread of the CV down, etc.
Unfortunately for their friends and family, these people who defy such common sense guidelines will bring the CV to them.
The other side of course are those that are obeying these common sense behaviors to stop the spread of the CV.
Unfortunately, there's going to be a lot of death on both sides being that the spread will continue, and until everyone is on the same page, it will continue too.

(100,114 posts)I'll admit I was in denial until the day the pandemic was declared. The bad thing is we may never get everyone on the same page, no matter how many people die as a result of this.
I said in another post today that if there were Jaws-like shark attacks on the beach that killed 100,000 people, you would have shark-denying truthers who would dare you to take a swim on Amity Beach. Go ahead, jump right in the ocean!

(33,580 posts)These modern day confederates are like the racists marching across the open ground at Gettysburg. No cover, no armor, just a weird belief in their "rights." (The "right" about which they cared the most was the "right" to treat human beings like farm animals.)
The death toll is highest in my Demographic, old white men.
Among old white men, I'm in the minority: Don't blame me, I voted for Ms. Clinton.

(90,367 posts)... from peak then the kGOP will say its just a blip and that the negative econ data is going to come post election.
What the messaging should be now is Trumps incompetence put us in the current econ situation.
Yep, a 10% bump in GDP from -40 looks great ... a 10% increase week over week in CV hospitalizations is just a blip

(3,634 posts)It will be far, far worse than that well before the election. They will try to cook the statistics and it will get too out of hand for even that to work. We are probably looking at a million deaths before November if they don't start shutting stuff down again pretty soon. It was doubling every three days for the whole month of February and early March before the shutdowns were put in place. With some people continuing to follow the protocols I am thinking the new rate will probably be about a week. We'll know before too long.

(36,544 posts)I just don't get it. I know lots of very smart people who believe this crisis is being blown out of proportion, all because they don't know anyone (yet) who has this disease. A good friend invited me to go hiking with her and some others this past weekend. WTF? I see us sheltering-in-place through fall, possibly end of the year, or longer, if stupidity continues to reign.

(111,397 posts)and the reality of the virus just hasn't hit a lot of people, especially those in rural areas that don't have meat processing plants or big warehouse distributors. They can't see it or smell it or taste it, so it's just something city people are dealing with now, nothing to worry about, baby needs a haircut and a hamburger.
The truth is that containment was never really an option, not with the first few cases identified here in December. This virus will continue to spread and there is little we can do about it except adopt common sense measures like avoiding crowds, washing our hands before our fingers get near our faces, staying home if we're ill, and so on.
Some people aren't sensible and will continue to spread this and some of them will die from it. Bungling at the top has facilitated this, from an orange toddler who doesn't want to mess up his makeup with a mask to hijacking trucks of medical supplies intended to supply hospitals.
I don't know how this will play out, what the final tally of dead will be and how deadly this disease will be as it continues to mutate. I just know morons gonna moron and we're responsible for our own protection, nobody else is going to do it for us.

Anti-maskers are scrapping the morality compass to live by the free market values compass.
The unread/hyperdistracted are used to these economic propaganda messages by now: Virtue is money making, and mememe virtue is by consensus.
Except that fools don't know that fearlessness isn't virtue, and that virtue isn't morality by consensus.
Collective stockholm syndrome stupidity will lead to mass individual suffering.

(6,139 posts)not reopening economy is not an option, its not even subject to discussion. The only purpose of lockdown is to flatten the curve - meaning maintain hospital capacity. Of course, localized short term lockdowns are still possible. It is actually quite important to have low level of spread which will help to reduce transmission long term. Vaccine is not coming for at least a year, lets just stop dreaming.

(9,090 posts)he's missed some pretty big chunks of time - not good for trump, or llimbaugh's advertising revenue.
it may be something else but sounds right to me they wouldn't be playing with the ad revenue like that , or scaring the GOP and trump like that. media really needs to dig into how much worry its generating
the ability to sell his show for premium rates is in danger if he keeps missing time and they have to use substitutes.
i tuned in this morn because he missed friday after doing the other part of the week. he explained with some voice gravel a bit about his treatments. he wants those thots and prayers......
there's a real possibility he won't be able to keep doing the show much longer. a great thing for democracy if liberals use this opportunity to push the ad industry to stop propping up rw radio. the industry is no doubt thinking about what's going to happen when 600 of the loudest stations on the planet go different ways in filling his spot after it being the anchor for 30 years.
dems will be missing a big chance to destroy trump and the gop if they don't pressure the ad industry to democratize talk radio
