DeSantis kills online learning program amid virus resurgence

TALLAHASSEE — With a stroke of his veto pen, Gov. Ron DeSantis wiped out the entire $29.4 million budget for a suite of online education services that have become critical to students and faculty during the Covid-19 outbreak.

The move, barring action before midnight Tuesday, will kill the Complete Florida Plus Program, an array of technology systems that faculty, staff and students throughout Florida rely on, never more so than now, in the midst of a pandemic that has amplified reliance on distance learning. The cuts include a database of online courses and an online library service that provides 17 million books to 1.3 million students, faculty and staff.

At least 2,000 adult learners could be cut off from their scholarships and school accreditation could even be at risk without the resources housed under Complete Florida, which are used by students at high schools, state colleges and universities. Some 150 employees in Tallahassee, Gainesville and Pensacola stand to lose their jobs.

DeSantis, whose office declined to comment on the cut, on Monday vetoed $1 billion from Florida’s 2020-21 budget as the state attempts to beat back a resurgence of the viral outbreak, which has sickened 152,434 people and killed 3,505 in one of the country's hottest Covid-19 zones....

Gwen Graham was a stainless moderate who led every poll against DeSantis. But the genius Bernie Sanders wing decided to push Andrew Gillum, who was considerably younger and less of a known quantity. Everybody knew Gillum was more liberal and dynamic than Graham. But anybody paying attention also knew that he had a troubled situation in Tallahassee with a looming FBI investigation that was guaranteed to be abused by the GOP during the general election.

Per norm, it was a laughable myth that turnout enthusiasm was what we needed. Gillum won the upset nomination then led the polls but he was ruthlessly portrayed as socialist and it impacted the critical Hispanic vote in South Florida. The comparisons to Venezuela were nonstop.

Consequently Andrew Gillum lost a race that Gwen Graham unquestionably would have won. No big deal.

At last word Andrew Gillum was headed to rehab after hanging his head over a toilet while puking through a drug induced incident that he initially lied about. Again, no big deal.

But he gives a wonderful speech and scores high on the progressive meter. I guess those are the priorities as opposed to competence and whether or not people will actually vote for him.

Because I knew Gillum would almost positively lose. I think if he had chosen one of teh excellent women public servants as his running mate, he still may have won, but some business dude with zero public service experience? Ugh.

Graham would have trounced that idiot DeSantis.

Not K-12, and I wish that part was getting more ground. THis literally erases all the SUS and CC academic libraries. Literally, they will be gone. No catalog, no way to search books, process books, check books out. No online databases or resources. No digital archive of books and journals and state documents. And, that is the tip of the iceberg.
