(35 posts)The caricature oriental playing Go in the fifth cartoon is doing it wrong. You hold the Go stone (Ishi) with your index and middle finger such that it rests on the nail of the index finger and is held in place by the middle finger above it. This allows you to place it on the board with a sharp click.
A high-quality Go board is cut and shaped by the artist to amplify and resonate that click. The clicks, and occasionally one player saying the word "atari," are pretty much the only sounds during a game.
Btw, the stones and board are sized such that the stones don't quite fit in neat rows and columns. They are very, very slightly too large, introducing a subtle disorder to the appearance of the game.
(I'm planning to submit this comment to the National Curmudgeon Association; I'm going for my 3-dan black annoying-curmudgeon belt.)
