Rumors from NYC teachers

This is going around the rumor mill. I have no idea if it's true. I am not a teacher or connected to NYC public ed.

The rumor is that NYC teachers might be out of a job if they don't go back to school in September. "Get resumes ready and take first job you find." They don't need as many teachers if they go remote. "Potentially catastrophic cuts."

1. I got sidelined as an Ed tech, but it makes no sense for the teachers to be cut.

Someone still has to teach the classes.

Your rowdy kids aren't sitting right next to their friends. And they aren't distracting the whole class. I bet administrators are thinking teachers could handle larger classes online. Not saying that's necessarily true. But it could be the thinking.

I'm thinking that if they are going with half the students coming in on some days and the other half coming in on other days, they probably won't need as many substitute teachers in my district here in Texas, if they don't go completely remote.

7. Wouldn't it be same classes but taught online and in-classroom simultaneously?

Only 1/5th of the kids are physically in the room on a given day, but all are in class. All the teachers would still have to work, no?

8. I've been teaching online since mid-March. It's twice as much work as in-person.

I have a friend who left to raise a child and had a right to a job if she came back in three years.

And I’m sure the contract has terms about “need” or demand.
