And is asymptomatic.
That is the only way he would be so careless about masks and having campaign rallies, he knows he is immune.

I just assume everyone has it.

(49,001 posts)However it would be false and wrong to say most people are positive. You do not have credible evidence for that. Period.
It would also be rather unethical to spread your belief since it would create false security about so-called "herd immunity" and people would needlessly get infected and die.

(884 posts)But it does seem warranted to parse positions like this a little more deeply. Admittedly, that's a little difficult in response to such a short statement, but it is possible.
You are right that it would be unethical to spread belief in herd immunity, but immune and asymptomatic are not, in fact, the same thing, or even anywhere close, and there is in fact considerable merit to operating on the belief that everyone has it, at least in terms of employing the appropriate precautions any time you are in proximity to any other person.
The difference between carrying the virus but not (yet, we should remember the gestation period) being symptomatic and being immune is a VERY big deal. Especially for a virus of which for many the symptoms may be so mild as to go unnoticed or mistaken for an everyday run of the mill chest cold, and especially during allergy season.
I don't see any evidence here that NatureMan is operating in bad faith or with any intentional negligence, so this seems like a good scenario for us to work together on helping craft a more wholly accurate and responsible understanding of this pandemic, while avoiding any sense of condemnation that is not entirely warranted.
In short, I believe the post to which you are responding merits augmentation, not repudiation.

However, in terms of your own behavior, assuming that most people are positive and asymptomatic is not a bad way to go.

(28,933 posts)Higher than the testing shows. That would only be about 30 million out of 330 million. So probably only around 8%

(8,445 posts)Well, I guess there are no actual conclusions yet because the scientists are still figuring things out, but people shouldn't count on immunity.
I have seen two studies confirming this proposition. Much like the common cold, post-infection immunity to SARS-CoV-2 is short-livedperhaps as little as two months.
If this is true, a vaccine will be functionally useless.

(25,855 posts)don't leave lasting immunity. I am somewhat skeptical of that claim, in that in my later years (I'm 71 now) I rarely get a cold. In the past ten years I doubt I've gotten more than three.
Here's the breakdown of causes of colds:
rhinoviruses - 10%-40%
coronaviruses 20%
RSV and parainfluenza 20%
The rest they're not as sure of, but from a variety of viruses.
My source: https://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/cold-guide/common_cold_causes
I have read various figures, but at a minimum there are several hundred different viruses that cause colds. The above site says 200. I've usually seen much larger numbers. And even if you get lasting immunity from whatever virus caused your most recent one, that's why people continue to get them throughout their lives.

(49,001 posts)No. What has been found is that some people tested for antibodies had diminished (or absent?) antibodies a couple of months later.
There are many parts to the immune system, and a person can mount an immune response even if there are not antibodies detected.
So, there is data on antibodies, BUT NOT YET data on immunity, which is harder to verify since deliberately attempting to infect people is difficult to pass by ethical review.

(28,933 posts)Looks like you are immune for a while but I don't see anything specific in any websites I have looked up. Generally people don't get the same strain of cold twice. There are hundreds out there and this article says you will have immunity for awhile to the strain you got. I would assume Covid would be similar in the body.

Science has not yet established that antibodies create immunity from future infections, or how long antibodies last even if they do create immunity.
