(2,947 posts)My son graduated from basic training during Desert Storm & we went down to celebrate.
Because of my civilian grade (worked DoD) I was given government billets at a very reasonable cost. When we checked in I immediately knew I would not be staying in this room. No air conditioning (summer Texas heat & broken unit) & a shared bathroom. If that is how they treat their Command staff, I feel for them. I told them I would not stay in those conditions, so they reversed my credit card & there I am with no place to stay when they were graduating hundreds of soldiers. The staff at the billets gave me some suggestions so I started calling.
I found a hotel that happened to be within blocks of the ceremony venue. The owners were so kind & accommodating. They gave us many extra towels because we had our son & some of his buddies the night before graduation for a swimming party.
Everywhere we went while in El Paso the people we so kind. I'm not sure how it is today, but I hope tRUmp hasn't tainted it beyond repair.

(3,252 posts)My first memories of El Paso go back to the 1950's. It's grown a lot since then but the kindness and and hospitality is still here. I live next to thr Rio Grand and it is very quiet and peaceful. All of my neighbors speak Spanish among themselves and are also flluent in English. many of them are ex military and hate the Thing in the White House with a passion.I've been staying busy renovating an old house for something to do under lock down but the thing I miss is Sunday at te Mercado in Juarez. In normal times 30,000 people cross the bridge going to Juarez every Sunday. Free music in every genre, people dancing, good food and endless merchandise.

I looked at the English set of anti-Trump signs today. Miserable selection. I checked 7 pages worth. Nothing was of this caliber.
