I FUCKING HATE STUPID PEOPLE..... Especially when they're relatives

My step-son and his wife are die-hard tRumpers. When I mentioned our Covid-19 curve vs. other countries "it's just because we're doing more testing now".

I couldn't believe it, but people are actually buying that shit.

I feel that if I counter that bullshit with actual proven facts then I might be able to keep SOMEONE from falling to the dark side, but on the other hand I have to see these people several times a year.

Maybe it's just time to say fuck-it, right wingers aren't shy about endlessly spouting their bullshit, it's time for liberals/progressives to be just as aggressive.

In TX and FL it is over 15%. This indicates we are also not doing enough tests as the positive rate shouldn’t be any more than 5% if we hope to control the outbreak.

I get the sense that the reason the graph of new COVID19 cases has a 7-day cycle is because there are certain days of the week (Saturday and Sunday) when we do far less testing than other days.

Get out your smartphone and google what they claim.

Look for websites ending in .edu, which ic where all the scientific studies live. The data for just about anything is online
and once you get used to looking for scientific papers ( weird titles for sure), it is pretty easy to debunk the Republican in ones midst.

So is it his excuse that he just can't be forced to give a damn about anyone but himself?

Some people go into medicine to do research and heal people. Some people go into medicine just to prove how smart they are, and they are not in it to help people. I've seen both kinds at a major medical school.

Sat Jul 4, 2020, 09:27 PM

Start with a baseline of facts.

Point A (The baseline) Do you agree that we have consistently increased testing week after week or month after month?

Point B. Despite the increase in testing, do you know that the number of reported case were going down? (The myth buster question... More testing but decreasing numbers)

If they give an excuse or justification for the false information that they believe, that’s where you end the conversation because it’ll only frustrate you. You’d be talking to a brick wall.

I've found that approach can make people a little less defensive because you're blaming somebody else who told them something stupid. It wrong foots them. I use the opportunity to change the subject--fast. YMMV, you might choose to pursue it. Or not.

It's better than banging your head into a brick wall when they stiffen up and get completely defensive, the more idiotic the statement, the harder they cling to it.

I came to a similar conclusion recently.

I've always tried to keep my social media relatively politics free, because I know I have right wing relatives.

But, they never shut up about their beliefs, so I decided I'm no longer letting them silence me out of some misguided sense of politeness.

Now, I've got a bunch of relatives who I will probably never speak to again, given who they've proven themselves to be.

The kicker? I'm glad they've shown me the ugliest side of themselves, because I don't feel bad about it. They are not good people, not decent people, they are hate-filled people. I don't need them in my life or my kids' lives.

But I can get their attention through bringing up a totally different but incriminating topic. They don’t like hearing facts and truths. When they respond with inevitable lies or crazy change the subject again to another truth — just like they do. Project their projection back.
