Disgusting beyond belief.
New this morning from the Washington Post's Yasmeen Abutaleb and Josh Dawsey:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-and-biden-campaigns-shift-focus-to-coronavirus-as-pandemic-surges/2020/07/06/53a4ec50-bd62-11ea-80b9-40ece9a701dc_story.html
Advisers to presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden see the covid-19 crisis as perhaps the clearest way yet to contrast the former vice president with President Trump, using the stumbling response and renewed surge in cases as way to paint Trump as uninformed, incapable of empathy and only concerned about his own political standing.
Trumps advisers, by contrast, are seeking ways to reframe his response to the coronavirus even as the president himself largely seeks to avoid the topic because he views it as a political loser. They are sending health officials to swing states, putting doctors on TV in regional markets where the virus is surging, crafting messages on an economic recovery and writing talking points for allies to deliver to potential voters.
The goal is to convince Americans that they can live with the virus that schools should reopen, professional sports should return, a vaccine is likely to arrive by the end of the year and the economy will continue to improve.
White House officials also hope Americans will grow numb to the escalating death toll and learn to accept tens of thousands of new cases a day, according to three people familiar with the White Houses thinking, who requested anonymity to reveal internal deliberations. Americans will live with the virus being a threat, in the words of one of those people, a senior administration official.

(82,849 posts)He's giving up. Any change in his tactics, any adaptation to conditions, even conceding that masking up is preferable to not wearing a mask, would all make it look like he was wrong before. And that simply cannot happen. Rule 1: Trump is never wrong. Thousands of you will die, maybe even millions, but that's a small price to pay to keep Trump from being wrong.

(22,919 posts)But with every passing week more people know more people who get seriously ill from Covid-19, or worse. The fear meter only goes up from here as this spreads across the country.

(19,286 posts)I remember when Italy was getting hit hard and they were seeing 700+ deaths a day. Many people were saying that Americans would never tolerate those death counts here. Well we got those counts times 3 or 4 and people learned to not care, so much so that now that we're down to 500 deaths a day they paint it as just great.
We're going to see an explosion of deaths, probably back up towards 2,000 a day, I think Republicans just don't care anymore.
This is a window into Nazi mindset and how I know that could happen here. These people watching 130,000+ of their fellow citizens die without caring at all would be totally fine with the military rounding up their neighbors to be sent to extermination camps.

(19,286 posts)A lot of the people getting it now are young people, those people are better vectors for the disease than older people. It's not the young people who have it now that will be dead for the most part, it's the people they infect that will die. So this delay could be even longer, but it is coming, of that there is no doubt.

(203 posts)A Trumper (someone I went to high school with 30 years ago) posted "Does anyone even know anyone who had Covid-19? I don't!" And he got at least 50 responses, all but like 2 that I saw were "Yeah, my mom" "Yes, my neighbor died" "My brother in law was in ICU". Probably not what he was expecting.
