https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/06/us/phoenix-arizona-police-shooting-garcia.htmlThe fatal shooting of a man in a parked car by Phoenix police officers over the weekend, captured on video in gruesome detail, is fueling a new round of protests against violent policing tactics.
The video showed several uniformed officers surrounding a parked car while pointing their guns at the man inside the vehicle. One of the officers shouted at the man, threatening to shoot him.
Then, in front of witnesses who were recording the episode, the officers unleashed a volley of gunfire. The victim was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to a statement by the Phoenix Police Department.
The shooting in the citys Maryvale neighborhood comes at a time when cities around the United States are grappling with anger over the deaths of African-Americans and Latinos at the hands of the police. Elsewhere in Arizona, the police in Tucson came under scrutiny in June over the killing, also captured on video, of Carlos Ingram Lopez.

(16,145 posts)Im so on the fence of defunding police and this certainly doesnt help matters. More are going to say defund police not change police. I know democratic supporters want to be careful with defund and I get it. But it just may go mainstream if this crap keeps up.

The movement to defund the police has been supported by activists for decades.[6] In June 2020, the "defund the police" slogan gained widespread popularity during the George Floyd protests.[7] Black Lives Matter, Movement for Black Lives, and other activists have used the phrase to call for police budget reductions and to delegate certain police responsibilities to other organizations.[8][9][10][11][12][13][14] While the slogan became popularized in 2020, the movement to reduce police presence in communities has been supported by activists and intellectuals for decades.[6][14] In Black Reconstruction, first published in 1935, W. E. B. Du Bois wrote about "abolition-democracy", which advocated for the removal of institutions that were rooted in racist and repressive practices, including prisons, convict leasing, and white police forces. In the 1960s, activists such as Angela Davis advocated for the defunding or abolition of police departments. The End of Policing, written Alex S. Vitale, was published in 2017, and it has been called "... a manual of sorts for the defund movement."[15][16][17][18][

I'm so friggin' sick of this. The cops need to be fired. Did you hear all those bullets flying? You'd think they were in a damned war zone instead of a neighborhood.

Don't misread my posts -- I am pro defunding the police and I, too, am sick of police abuse.

(51,299 posts)That's the police dept trying to get out in front of the story.
Let's wait until the bodycams of the officers actually involved in the shooting.
Should be plenty of that, seeing as they talked to him for for a bit before shooting.
And no where, no where, is there confirming that this was the guy the police were looking for. The original story says he wasn't even the suspect.
