For the second time in our history many southern states are committing self-slaughter.

During the civil war they destroyed themselves following propaganda. Today they are destroying themselves following propaganda.

The southern states are heading for an inconceivable health crisis. Their hospitals are being overwhelmed. Their leaders are fools who are following a fool in the white house. Many southern states need to be shut down and that is not going to happen.

In an ironic twist, the only thing that may save the southern states is a Democratic president. I believe southern states like Florida, Georgia, and maybe Texas could vote for Biden. In order to save their lives.

It must be horrifying for Democrats, the sane, who live in these states.

Are turning these states bluer every day they speak, tweet, or do what trump wants them to do. Both Florida and Texas are disaster zones and they're talking about opening schools up? The disasters are these people , and I predict they'll never be elected to office again for this.

The Death Cult could circle the Jesus wagon train, accept the pandemic as God's will, and see salvation when Trump tells them "it's going away".

Or science could prevail for those still able to reason logically. Either way an overwhelming vote margin will be needed to balance oppression, purges, poll place shenanigans, and unforeseen cheating expertise.

The courts and the media still function. Hard to see how Trump could close those windows by November, but hey he's tried everything else. Close all public airwaves to prevent panic and ask foreign dictators how to supress publications. Clog the courts with appeals.

Personally, if I were the Democratic Party, I'd focus my resources on 3-5 most likely states to flip blue, and lawyer up.

Don't count me pessimistic. We will win this. But we should call the plumber to disconnect all faucets because the kitchen sink hurling team will need to be at the ready.

It's going to hit the southern states bad. Not that they won't be livable in different ways, but decline in economies and quality of life as fewer people and businesses want to locate here is expected.

Self-induced destruction by @2/3 of residents, just like the pandemic holocaust, though.

Not Louisiana! We have a Democratic Governor, John Bel Edwards, who kept us from being Mississippi, Florida, and Arizona. And our Republican state legislators? Demonstrating to not wear masks like morons.

You think one Democrat isn’t important? John Bel Edwards has singularly fought the likes of Steve Scalise, John “Aw Shucks” Kennedy, and Don Trump of Louisiana citizens.

And we have Medicaid expansion and We defeated a Mardi Gras group infection.

Thanks to everyone for not referring to us here as “southern states”.

New Orleans and Louisiana is a country all by itself.

But this is a favorite narrative of the OP.

Never mind the spikes in other states that are not in the south; he apparently can't see those.

NC has a Dem governor, shut us down early, and postponed the next phase. Unfortunately, any state in any region is at risk depending on the states surrounding it, never mind all the visitors from other places.

I just went back to work Monday on a mostly work from home/staggered office schedule, but full time thank goodness; my employer had closed at the end of March. I am so glad we have Gov. Cooper right now. I was lucky that I had very few issues getting unemployment set up and started, and it was a lifesaver. I'm going back to work without the strain of having a pile of bills demanding my immediate attention and stressing me out. I feel like he's done a really good job, and the last PPP poll (about 6/23) bore out my opinion. I was polled in it, so I was tickled to see I was in the majority on all the questions!
It gets old, all the south bashing. I had written a much longer, more blunt and to the point reply to the op and deleted it in favor of brevity. The south has its issues but it's not just us, it's the whole country. The cell phone videos we now see all the time prove it; they're from all over.

Cooper has been great. I was working part-time for a county here in the Piedmont when all this started.

It's a red county, but they jumped right on this thing. If they had to put people out of work, they found other ways for them to earn money. I'm retired and decided not to return, but not because of anything they did or didn't do. People seem to following Cooper's mask mandate, which is great.

Yeah, I keep a rough tally on those cell phone videos - the south is really lagging behind some of those other "perfect" states lol!

I'll bet the answer can be found in this book:

My two cents worth is that it is mob mentality fueled by trump's lies and refusal to act as a role model in any way (mask) other than as a destructive role model.

You can Google the title of this book and get the table of contents and a decent amount of pages to read in the preview. If it's not too expensive, I may get it.

That "second wave" in 1918 came from a vaccine that wasn't tested over time and did not stop the spread of the virus just the bacteria from it.

Let me know when a Southern state has as many cases and/or deaths as New York.

It's a virus, and though we here in the (apparently more enlightened) North did what we could to stem the tide, the sickness and death toll was and is the worst in the country - with Democratic Governors all around.

And yes of course poor Republican leadership will lead to unnecessary infection, but if the average person doesn't do the right thing then even Biden can't 'save their lives' - and believe me when I tell you that here in New Jersey there are plenty of people STILL not doing the right thing even though we were decimated.

I'll take a photo this weekend of my neighbor's usual mask-less weekend get together around their newly opened backyard pool - with at least half of the attendees over 60 - and they're ALL Democrats.

I believe the OP is from NY; he was strangely quiet when the refrigerated trucks were busy there.

Sat Jul 11, 2020, 11:20 AM
Jul 2020

we're seeing in some of the Southern, Republican controlled states is that they had two months to prepare for what was coming - and they did nothing - even while watching the destruction that was happening here in the Northeast. In fact, they made it much more likely that when the virus made it's way to them that the welcome mat would be out and ready for it.

So in a sense I agree with the OP but it paints with way too broad a brush.
