(115,995 posts)She's not someone who's used to this kind of limelight, so there's no reason to expect her to be as smooth as Rachel or anyone else who's regularly on TV. She's an academic, and that's how she comes across. She seems very honest and credible.

(47,764 posts)She's obviously a little uncomfortable and nervous being on national TV, most people would be, but I thought she was fine. I just finished reading her book and she is an impressive writer.
Also, I'm sure she knows that members of her family are watching her on television, which would undoubtedly make her more nervous.

Growing up, my mother (later diagnosed with bipolar and more) was a very angry person. So, I learned to be VERY careful in how I phrased things. Oh and to avoid her if at all possible. Her family did not have money once her father went off on his own to become a pilot, and she was a witness to the abusive and crazy behavior of her grandfather but was not under his thumb like the others. She explained why she didn't write the book until now, which is because she did not expect anyone to believe her, at least until the NYT story came out. It took guts to write that book because Trump and his followers will do what they can to harass her and make her life miserable.

(7,220 posts)I could see her taking deep breaths, clearly trying to calm herself. She nods a lot when Rachel speaks, and occasionally gives a nervous laugh when Rachel says something quasi-funny. However, she certainly appears to be well-educated and has an extensive vocabulary.
Side note, the family resemblance is very strong. That might tend to bias a lot of people against her. (I didn't notice it in the book bio pic, but in person it's quite noticeable.) It creates a kind of cognitive dissonance to see someone who looks so much like Donald but can speak intelligently and isn't arrogant, self-important or vindictive.

With her Ph.D. in psychology, Mary is the perfect family member to dissect the dynamics of this family. The daddy complex that she described has been passed through generations and we are now seeing similar manifestations in 45's children. I almost feel empathy towards them.
Her explanation for why she wrote the book now as opposed to pre-2016 election is also perfectly stated. We (the country) now have the lived-experience with 45 to grasp the contents of her lived experience as a Trump family member. The book is perfectly timed.

I could understand if you thought she might phrase things differently, thought her interview with Stephanopolis went better or even if you thought she appeared less than forthcoming (but I''d disagree strongly).
