Apparently Trump crossed some kind of line with Republicans with his postponing of elections which is odd considering he has been floating this idea for over a year. I did not think one of the founders of Federalist would call him a fascist and call for immediate impeachment

With this said every person who speaks out forcefully is exactly what is needed. We cannot allow trump to normalize a dictatorship and must stop him

(51,673 posts)If it only hurt the Dems' reelection it would be applauded. Since it could hurt their chances of keeping seats they are admonishing it. tRump care about himself, not them. He is doing this for his own reelection and doesn't care about holding seats for the GOP at this point.

(24,399 posts)that assert Ds are looking to steal/delay elections. The idea that Obama would not leave office after his second term ended was gospel in these circles. Totally unfounded, but nevertheless, accepted as some hidden truth.
So when tRump overtly suggests delaying the election, well, they hear their worst fears.

When arch conservative law professor Steven Calabresi, who blasted the Mueller investigation as "unconstitutional," calls Donald Trump a fascist and suggests that his recent tweet is grounds for his immediate impeachment and removal, that is really something.

Biography
Calabresi graduated from the Moses Brown School in Providence, Rhode Island in 1976. He then attended Yale College, graduating cum laude in 1980. He received his J.D. degree from Yale Law School, where he was the Note & Topics Editor of the Yale Law Journal. After law school, he served as law clerk for Judge Ralph K. Winter of the US Appellate Court, Second Circuit, Judge Robert H. Bork of the D.C. Circuit, and Justice Antonin Scalia of the United States Supreme Court.
While at Yale Law School, Calabresi and two Yale College friends, Lee Liberman Otis and David McIntosh, founded the Yale chapter of the Federalist Society, one of three original chapters of the Society. In 2019, he was chairman of the Society's board of directors. Calabresi is an active libertarian-conservative author and commentator.
Calabresi joined the faculty of Northwestern Law School in 1990, and has taught there since then. He has been a visiting professor at Yale Law School (in the Fall semesters of 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016), and a Visiting Professor of Political Theory at Brown University, where he has taught since 2010.

Rebekah Mercer, who has herself spread hundreds of thousands of dollars among dozens of Republican committees over the years, hasn't given a cent to Trump's reelection cause.

That window will get wider and more reasons will appear. In short order I would guess as Covid and the economy grows worse and GOP election clouds continue to darken.

(19,569 posts)I welcome their dissent, but in this case I recognize it as obvious knee jerk desperation at this far too late hour. Their backbone they've spent all these many years building is crumbling. Because of their own choices to embrace the Tea Baggers and their ilk.
It must suck to be in their shoes. Dogs, fleas and all that.

(22,292 posts)If the election is pushed out past Jan 1, every member of Congress on the ballot would not be re elected. There would be no House of Representatives, so no Nancy Pelosi as President.
The next person in the line of succession is the President Pro Tem of the Senate, Senator Patrick Leahey who is not on the ballot this year. There are more Republican seats on the ballot this year than Democratic, so Democrats would have the majority. #MoscowMitch and Cornyn would be out since they are both on the ballot.
We would have the unique situation of being governed by only one Chamber of Congress. Of course it would mean nothing could be done according to the existing rules except appointments which have to be approved by the Senate. It would be an excellent time for RBG to step down
Of course per 25th amendment, the interim or acting president would appoint a vice president which would really be fun to watch.
They would go nuts! They would be shouting back at #45 so loudly they would sound like Question Time in the British Parlaiment

(7,436 posts)Trump's fellow gumming up the USPS works is no big deal to the GOP. It follows their wishes. To say you want a delay so that more folks can vote? Not their game plan.
The answer here is that the system needs to be fixed. We need better access now. Mail-in voting can be handled if we want to.
