Inside a mostly empty youth sports facility, inside a bubble designed to keep the coronavirus from getting in, the Utah Jazz and the New Orleans Pelicans made a statement before the NBAs reopening that they wanted to make sure got out.
Black lives matter, of course. Police brutality needs to end. Equality must be pursued.
It was more than that, though.
When it comes to speaking out on social justice issues in the United States, there will be no fear of retribution, no holding back to appease some segment of the masses. If the old days need to go, then old fears of what some might think of it do as well.
It is time, most Americans believe, for significant change in the country, and if having players kneel during the pregame national anthem is too much change for you to accept, then move on because this generation is going to move forward without you.

(183,043 posts)Very up close. The announcers should pipe down from time to time and let us hear. Same criticism with baseball but with the piped in crowd noises. Some is okay but its really a unique listening in opportunity.

(856 posts)They said one reason for the fake crowd noise was to prevent them from picking up (and broadcasting) all the cussing the players do during the game.

Silver and the NBA are still bending the knee to China. Even after the ESPN story came out the other day.

Now the NBA needs to work on their China issues, but this is a good start in the right direction.
