Oregon state troopers start duty at federal courthouse ahead of Portland protests Thursday

https://www.oregonlive.com/portland/2020/07/changing-of-the-guard-oregon-state-troopers-start-duty-at-federal-courthouse-in-portland-quiet-so-far.html

A handful of Oregon troopers stood Thursday afternoon behind the fence at the federal courthouse in downtown Portland – the scene of nightly clashes between federal officers and protesters that state police are now taking over to try to defuse the sometimes violent confrontations.

The arrival of troopers occurred after dozens of federal officers filled city streets late Wednesday in the largest visible response yet by the federal government to downtown demonstrations. Officers faced off with protesters at multiple locations near the courthouse, all at once. The oft-chaotic confrontations brought tear gas, impact munitions and arrests.

Thursday will mark a new chapter in the police response to 64 straight days of demonstrations although it remains to be seen what the oversight of Oregon State Police will bring.

The troopers, wearing their standard-issue two-tone blue uniforms and broad hats, milled about Thursday afternoon behind the fence, chatting with each other and courthouse security workers.
