1 Marine dead, 8 missing after accident off California coast
One Marine is dead, two are injured and eight remain missing after an accident Thursday involving an amphibious assault vehicle off the California coast.
U.S. Marine Corps officials said on Twitter early Friday that search-and-rescue efforts were still underway for the vehicle, which was carrying 15 Marines and one sailor as part of a training exercise for the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident,” Col. Christopher Bronzi, the unit’s commanding officer, said in a statement. “I ask that you keep our Marines, Sailors, and their families in your prayers as we continue our search.”
Officials said the mishap occurred at about 5:45 p.m. Thursday during a routine activity near San Clemente Island, when the vehicle began taking on water.
