Michael Steele, former chair of the Republican National Committee, on Thursday remembered his friend Herman Cain and issued a pointed reminder about the threat posed by the coronavirus.
Cain, the Tea Party activist who ran for the GOP presidential nomination in 2012, was hospitalized earlier this month after testing positive for COVID-19, less than two weeks after being pictured not wearing a face mask during President Donald Trumps campaign rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Cain died Thursday at the age of 74.
Look, Herman Cain was a buddy of mine, Steele told MSNBCs Joy Reid. I appreciated every moment I got to spend with him and my heart goes out to him and his family for this loss.
Steele then spelled out the harsh truth about the contagion that has now killed at least 150,000 people in the United States. Worldwide, the virus has claimed more than 670,000 lives.
The reality of it is for those who dont think this is serious, that those who think this is some made-up China virus that was imported into the country, said Steele. You know, live in that bubble and you will die in that bubble. And thats all that can be said.

(4,260 posts)of harsh GOP bullshit. It appeared that Cain was doing the tweeting. Several days ago "someone" posted a health update saying Cain was still in the hospital on oxygen therapy, and that he'd be alright, but that the doctors just were being extra careful. The next day his family announced he had died.
It makes me go hmmmm - "they" were really trying to keep Cain's exposure, Covid-19 health decline, and death as quiet as possible.

(11,760 posts)If only. We'd have a country less full of assholes if that were the case.
The virus does not respect ideology, borders, or anything else. You can be a mask hating, Trump defending idiot and pass the virus on to people who play by the rules and try to prevent the spread as best as possible.
I know that Steele was friends with and respected Cain, but Cain chose to go to Tulsa. He chose not to wear a mask or practice any precautions that the experts said, might prevent people from getting the virus. All of the people who went to that rally and to the church in Arizona after that, they made a choice. The rest of us who wear our masks, wash our hands, and try to follow the guidelines and might still get the virus because idiots like the former choose to be assholes, we don't live in that bubble, but we still die.

(11,760 posts)Which is why my first words were, "If only."
There are some people that say things like, "This has to transcend politics". My thought however, is that everything is or can be political. I know that I am being somewhat pedantic because they likely mean that "This should transcend partisanship". People shouldn't support things just because they are "Republican" or "Democratic" policies, ideas, etc...
The problem, as you reiterated is that there is no "bubble". Yes ignorance is a bubble, there is a right wing bubble of thought and information. The virus however, could not give less of a damn about bubbles. Viruses want hosts. They are designed only to replicate themselves and whether you support masks or not, whether you think it is a hoax or not, whether you care if China is at fault or not, we are ALL susceptible.

"Folks, we cannot, we cannot stop you from being stupid. We put the information out there," Steele continued. "We've tried to educate and inform. We've got the best and brightest scientists in the country that have been summarily dismissed by this administration and particularly this president."
Steele couldn't "help your stupidity at this point, that's your risk, it won't be mine," he said. "So, my heart goes out to the fallen who've not listened. But at the same time, for those who are, take care. Wear the damn mask."

If you catch the virus you will live out the remaining day in a bubble (hospital bed surround in plastic) with tubes in isolation ...
