Nextdoor is a hyperlocal social networking service for neighborhoods. Users of Nextdoor are required to submit their real names and street (without the exact number) to the website; posts made to the website are available only to other Nextdoor members living in the same neighborhood.

I joined a few years ago. I post (or respond to posts) a few times each week on local issues.
This morning when I clicked on, I got a message saying my account had been disabled'.
Someone (another unnamed member) reported me for using a fictitious name.
Hey - even someone as sweet as me occasionally rubs someone the wrong way and they strike out.
My first name is Robert. Im 75 years old, and all my life I have gone by Bob. I guess thats the fictitious name, as you are suppose to use your real name.
I appealed, but got back an automated message saying, due to the corona virus, moderators are slow in responding.
So if you belong to NextDoor, and use an abbreviated form of your name (Sue for Suzanne; John for Jonathan; etc) you may want to correct it.

Sorry you had problems.

(50,922 posts)cesspool of racism and sexism. I live in a very blue area, and was horrified to learn there was so much racist, sexist scum in my neighborhood.
And the site does little to moderate these people. One post that called for "snarling dogs and fire hoses" to be used against the BLM protestors was still standing after about 2 weeks and about 10 reports from me.
So I ditched it.

(3,587 posts)I live in a very rural area, and we depend on NextDoor during fire season. Our community seems to use it more for helping each other.
For instance, today someone wanted to know if anyone knew someone who could remove beehives, and I happen to know that there is a person in our neighborhood who is a beekeeper, so I hooked them up with each other.
We were all evacuated in the big fire back in 2018 (thank god no one lost their house, we happen to have a fire chief who lives in the neighborhood and he got the crew up her right quick at 1:00 am!) Nextdoor was our lifeline when none of us could come up here to see if we still had a house. It is a great tool to know what was going on in our community.
The same when we have water issues (we are all on our own water district), or we do have someone breaking into mailboxes at times and Nextdoor gives us a heads up when something like that happens (someone stole new checks from the mailbox, and stupidly left the paper wrapper so we knew they were stolen. We reported it to the bank and prevented them from actually using the checks, which they did later the next night. They got bustedj) Anyway, I digress....
Due to the fire season, (now that PG&E shuts the power down when it is crispy like it is now then gets windy), it helps us get through those times as well.
Every now and then someone does seem to want to put politics or opinions into their messages, but less often than what it could be.
So again, I guess I have some pretty good neighbors.
Napa (up in the mountains) is a Blue on Blue area though, but we do have some rednecks here and there. Overall, I really like the NextDoor app. I'm sorry that your account got messed with.

I was immediately reported and my account suspended. Now my address is tagged and they won't let me in unless I prove my real name.
That site is full of conservative hacks who are constantly spewing pro-Trump bullshit. I don't want to be back. I can get my entertainment on free republic if I wanted to.

(34,195 posts)Lots of right wingers on NextDoor. and moderation is almost non existent.
But it's where I found a good, inexpensive carpet cleaning service, etc.
Yet I am often attacked for supporting our N.M. governor's "Wear a mask, social distancing" policy.

(25,586 posts)Theyre just pissed off about everyone and everything, perpetually enraged about anything they see. Its fucking ridiculous. I joined to help find lost dogs and see local garage sales, not be crushed in the death throes of an increasingly-irrelevant generation.

(18,402 posts)You do realize a large portion of the DU community consists of boomers.
Whatever generation you belong to is going to be called irrelevant before you know it. Enjoy.
Codeine
(25,586 posts)Im quite comfortable with that, and we shant engage in a generational scorched-Earth flameout when our time comes, I assure you.

(18,402 posts)Though I dont think youre wholly typical of your generation. I know a lot of good Xers who do not hold biases, and tend to judge individuals by the content of their character, not their chronological condition.

(25,154 posts)For some reason Ted Cruz's posts keep popping up in my FB News Feed...(I follow him cuz he's my senator) His page is a cesspool of racists. I report as many posts possible. I doubt if does any good. I also will call them out if they live in another state..(Stupid waste of time)
I wish his posts couldn't pop up so often in my feed. He must put out 20 posts a day about antifa. Maybe I should unfollow him until the election is over.

(3,599 posts)Initially it was just to see what everyone else was posting with no real intent to converse ourselves. But, that all changed later that year. It was Thanksgiving morning and Mrs. Bumwood realized she was missing a spice of some sort. With family coming that day for dinner, she drove to the local grocer while I tended to vacuuming duties. I had just finished when she came back into the house and told me to come to the garage. She kept saying something about a dog. Sure enough, there was a strange dog in the backseat of her car. Shew has spotted it when returning from the grocery. She knocked on several doors and asked around but no one recognized the dog. So, she brought it home.
I posted about the dog and waited for a call back while we enjoyed turkey and everyone visited with the dog. Eventually that evening the frantic owners contacted us and arranged to come pick her up. Every time since when I've perused it it's been mostly people warning others about suspicious cars/people in the neighborhood.

(10,014 posts)Mostly lost dogs and alerts about hawks attacking backyard chickens, and porch pirates.
I found an arborist through the site.
Today, a guy posted that he just moved to town to go to law school and was looking for IT work. Within minutes he was welcomed to the neighborhood and a neighbor who owns a small computer company asked him to come in for a chat.
I did notice that when a post is statewide, like from the Department of Natural Resources, the replies are more in you face and the posters use their first names and last initial where everyone in the city use their full names.
I guess it depends on your neighbors.

(1,576 posts)It's a cesspool that I have been thinking about quitting and you're post motivated me to quit, come back to this post and respond. I have no "social media" accounts now and use duckduckgo.com instead of the google. I use private browsing for general web surfing and if a site won't let me enter because of that fact ... well, it's too bad for them. I don't need what ever it is I am seeking on that site.
My managed cookie list is miniscule. I have a mobile phone that I never use except in an emergency and my head is covered with aluminum foil.

"Did anyone here the fireworks being set off near Pine Street?"
"I saw someone driving slow on Juniper Drive. The car looked suspicious."
"My power is out. Is your power out?"
"There's a stray cat that's in my yard right now. Is it yours?"
"Why do the garbage collectors have to make so much noise?"
"Who do I call to report someone for not edging their sidewalk?"
"Did anyone else hear the party on Clover Lane? They were playing loud MEXICAN music!"
"My neighbor's security lights shine in my window at night."
