WHEN will he face a legitimate investigation and consequences. Matt Gaetz is a human sex trafficker, still sitting in congress. Until something is done about these people, I cant be bothered to get all lathered up about Cuomo.

(16,197 posts)Rich (or appearing-rich) white Republican men generally get away with everything they do.
There are a few outliers who have paid for their criminal activities, mostly because they crossed other rich white dudes.
I would love to see some of them receive some consequences, but I don't see it ever happening.

Notably Bernie Madoff. He robbed rich people and paid the price.

(22,650 posts)Deciding not to give a shit about some cases until Republicans give a shit about some cases is a great way for no one to get justice. Republicans don't care if they're hypocrites; I'm not interested in Democrats being hypocrites to dunk on Republican hypocrisy.

(16,851 posts)I think that's exactly was implied. Whether that was the OP's intention or not, I don't know. There may be more than one possible interpretation, but I think that was certainly a valid one.
I'll admit I'm probably somewhat biased, because I'm a bit weary of statements like "Until something is done about these people, I cant be bothered to get all lathered up about Cuomo." Whatever TFG or any other Republican may have gotten away with has absolutely no bearing on what Cuomo is alleged to have done or how it should be addressed.

By that reasoning, we should not address any crimes, because not all are prosecuted.
We need to hold our own accountable, because people have been hurt by Coumo - and it is not a progressive value to ignore people who are harmed, for the sake of political expediency.

The OP is addressing the blatant HYPOCRISY we are forced to accept.

The point is, Do those assaulted by Trump matter too?

(7,002 posts)It doesn't change the fact that Progressives would look and BE pretty stupid to put Cuomo in the defendant's chair before Trump sees his moment of justice. It's the sort of purity that undermines our trustworthiness as people able to appreciate the actual degree of intentional harm. For example, Al Franken.
It's the same basic sensibility and personal equation of justice distilled into absolutism that animates the people who dedicate their lives to picketing abortion clinics. They're not fundamentally wrong but they are denying the complexity and ignoring the competitive priorities.
Okay, Pile on.
Ms. Toad
(34,330 posts)Should Derek Chauvin not have been tried because we have not yet brought to justice police who committed similar crimes against Blacks earlier?
It's not a matter of politics, or competitive priorities. If a wrong was done - especially to a disadvantaged group - we need to stop pointing our fingers at the other side and say "They were worse (sub voce and too bad, so sad that those women have to be sacrificed for politics)" We need to right the wrong, especially if it is someone that the Democratic Party might have influence over.
jaxexpat
(7,002 posts)without serving elected offices we have no ability to right any wrongs because we don't exist at all and our best intentions and desires are nothing buy perpetual protest. If you can figure out a means wherein justice gets served without electing judicious people to power I'm all ears. Ugly truths are unsavory.
Prosecuting Chauvin was important because it was an act of successful public protest. The success was not eliminating one or two bad cops from their service. It was the exemplification of what is wrong and how to fix it for police forces across the country. The reform is a process. Like maintaining a campfire. It requires tending and occasionally more fuel or it will go out and cold.
If I thought red state GOP voters would change their habits and begin to vote Democratic by the removal and public excoriation of Cuomo I'd be all for it. But barring that eventuality, I see it as probable loss of support for Democrats in an already divided state.
BTW, I hate it that my logic is probably right.

(1,910 posts)Dems in NY have the power to impeach Cuomo for his horrid behavior. And that is exactly what they should do.
Dems overall can pressure Congress to investigate Trump, that is what they should do. Dems can assist the Manhattan DA in their investigation.
Dems should root for the prosecutors in the Gaetz case to find enough evidence to charge him and put him away for as long as possible.
All of these things are the right thing to do. None of these are mutually exclusive. Dems should use whatever power they have in each situation. In the Cuomo case, Dems have the power and should use it.
The women harmed in the Cuomo case need justice and not giving it to them because of Trump and Gaetz is wrong.
Thanks. They are not mutually exclusive.
