(22,327 posts)We earned it. Something the wealthy who inherited their money, don't know much about. They think they have much better uses for these funds, so, let the peasants eat cake!

Of course, we entitled to it. A deal is a deal. I thought Rs all believed in business deals.

(4,327 posts)Be very careful. These GOP jerks are just vicious enough to have a long-term plan to change the meaning of the word "entitlement" so they can wipe out all these programs.
If you receive money from an entitlement program, that means you are entitled to it. That money has YOUR NAME (TITLE) on it, because YOU EARNED THE RIGHT TO RECEIVE IT!

(3,943 posts)A yearly social security statement once youre getting a check that shows how much you and your employer paid in (lifetime) versus how much youve received. I think it would help educate people as to how these programs are funded. Democrats could use this because people on average get back more than they paid in. The only way for this to work is to increase the tax base or cut benefits. So Republicans are totally against increasing taxes. Their fix is benefits cuts. Dems need to hammer this home.

(4,327 posts)It has your title (name) on it, because you earned it. For too long, these people have been allowed to distort the English language to suit their twisted purposes. Stand firm against them.

(58,785 posts)We created this national retirement program that we pay for for ourselves. We arranged for employers to direct a portion of employees' EARNED remuneration directly into the employees' national retirement fund.
It's OURs. It's ALL ours. Even most trumpists believe that and voted for him to protect it.
One easy but significant way to fight for it is to use the word "entitled" to mean entitled, not the Republican, racism and greed-driven corruption of undeserving.

(13,211 posts)Republican oldsters need to start looking at those young people they currently shortchange. Every time a Republican cuts funding for education, healthcare, or nutrition they are cutting the future funding of Social Security and Medicare. It isn't just that Republicans want to cut Social Security and Medicare. They want to underfund its future by stunting the wage growth of the young and standing in the way of legal immigration. This is a "reap what you sow" double whammy that comes from the Republican Party.

(5,210 posts)the employer has to match. Think workers would get that in cash if the program is ended? Not likely. The oppressor class will keep most of it, and still claim you got a tax cut.

(19,208 posts)Entitlement my ass! My employer and I paid into that for 40+ years. If that's an "entitlement" you can kiss my ass.
raging moderate
(4,327 posts)You are entitled to receive that money because your employer and you paid into it for 40+ years. Because I worked for the public school system during most of my career, my employers and I did not pay quite enough into the system to qualify me for Social Security payments. Therefore, I am not entitled to it. You, however, ARE entitled to it. Don't worry about me; I am entitled to receive my teacher's pension instead. Enjoy!

(19,208 posts)They frame it almost as if it's welfare, and their brain-dead constituents agree.
I know it's my money, you know it's your money, but republicans believe it's their money. They frame the word "entitlement" to mean a government giveaway.

(8,994 posts)decided there was not enough money coming into Social Security and DOUBLED the payroll deduction from 7 1/2 % to 15 %.
Then the next year he said: We are swimming in money and can easily afford the largest tax cut on record to the uber wealthy.
Gore had witnessed them looting the SSI fund continually like it was a giant slush fund and wanted it to start being put in a lock box.
You see where that got him...........
Anytime, throughout our history, the Republicans see a large amount of money somewhere, they go after it for their own use.........
It's not only SSI retirement money, SSI also funds all the disability money, don't forget that!!!!!!!!

For those that say, it will never happen, too many people will take to the streets. Well tell it to woman that never dreamed they would be mandated to carry rapists baby to term, and allow rapist visitation, or die carrying a dead fetus until gubment says you may remove it.
They never thought it would happen. Until they met todays GQP and their Christian court.
Why the hell is the DCCC not screaming at every microphone right now, with McConnell, Scott, Graham saying it out load. Even Cawthorn had a plan to end SS, but GQO glued his lips shut for telling tells on GQP partys.
Their plan will also leave SSDI recipients with no help at all.
Fuck every damn one of those vet hating, women hating, senior citizen hating, fake Jesus worshiping, greedy, evil sons and daughters of bitches. I wish Covid would do its worst on each of them. And their damn families.
We need to end immediately, ALL retirement entitlements to ALL politicians before a dime of SS is looted.

(1,672 posts)Getting rid of those "entitlements" turns the Social Security and Medicare contributions you made into taxes. And remember this is a tax that gets capped after you make so much money, so it is a completely regressive tax. A poll tax if you want.

(601 posts)The word "entitlement" has been demonized. When you work 40 hours a week your paycheck is an entitlement, because you are ENTITLED to it! Someone, at some point in time, has equated the the world "entitlement" with the word "handout".

(3,943 posts)That both SS & Medicare are grossly underfunded. People on average get quite a bit more back in benefits over the lifetime compared to what they paid in. Urban Institute did a nice report (full if data) on the topic and except for the top income range (Single Male with maximum taxable $137k in 2020) every other group got back more than they paid in. I dont use the word entitlement because of that.
They need to do something. I like the concept of the Sanders bill. A $200 raise monthly and increased taxes to stabilize the system. Its going to be a progressive system (like our tax system) but that isnt such a bad thing.
Democrats need to make SS the focus of the election. Push a bill thru now and let Republicans vote NO on the record than hammer them with it. I think the average American is ignorant as to how these programs work and the benefits of them. They lifted the elderly out of poverty. They need to educate people.
