A California vice principal is reportedly on leave after being caught on video during a confrontation with three Black teenage girls.
Fred Veenendaal, vice principal at Sunnyside High School in Fresno, is seen on the video talking on his cell phone to what appears to be police. Veenendaal then says he has "three Section 8 people here, ghetto girls." It is unclear how the confrontation started.
"Section 8" refers to a federal program that provides rental assistance to low-income families, the elderly, and disabled individuals.
The news was picked up by FOX26, which reported that the girls were Kyra Schrubb, 17, Bri'janae Lewis, 17, and a friend. They say they were just walking through the gated community to cut their walk in half.

(82,849 posts)When someone whips out their camera and starts recording you, stop yourself for just one moment and consider how what you're doing will look to your worst enemy. You may decide that the best course of action is to shut up and walk away.

(33,643 posts)the 'ghetto girls' comment was the one that's going to sink him. Really didn't have to say that.
If it's private property, it's not terribly unfair to walk up and inquire 'excuse me, do you live, or are you visiting someone, in the neighborhood' and if they say 'no we're just taking a shortcut' and you say 'well, this is property property, not a thoroughfare, please don't use it as such' that's one thing.
I mean I think it's dick move but it's not a horrible thing to do.
Start using words like 'ghetto girls' you're showing what it's REALLY about, in it a very obvious way
One thing about Fresno though is ... it's traditionally and mostly still quite a poor place. And it's a place with a lot of very poor people living very close to more (in some cases much more) wealthy people as it gentrifies slowly.
Drive down Huntington Blvd sometime (my cousin used to live on it, she got a GREAT deal on a killer old house in 2008 crash). It's magnificent, many houses are historical landmarks. Then literally drive one block off Huntington and every third house/yard looks like it should be facing the railroad tracks in East Bumfuck, Oklahoma circa 1947.
Like Antioch, CA (for example) there's a lot of tension between the people w/some money and the people without much ... who live very, very close by in many cases.
My cousin sold and left because she was afraid there, basically. And she's as liberal a lady as you'd ever want to meet.

(33,643 posts)And has extra authority as a vice principal.
I'm not always a big fan of 'cancellation' for stuff like this that occurs completely in their private time and outside of their job duties, but I probably make exception under these circumstances, as it likely directly impacts his work as well.
At minimum the district should be poring over his records, complaints against him, etc.
I think it's pretty likely they'll find ... dude takes this attitude to work as well.
