Donald Trump's Trials Should Not Be Televised

Trump is no mere apprentice when it comes to manipulating the media in his favor.

By Marjorie Cohn, TruthOut August 8, 2023

https://truthout.org/articles/donald-trumps-trials-should-not-be-televised

Two days after a federal grand jury charged Donald Trump with three conspiracies for his attempts to overturn Joe Biden’s election victory, culminating in the January 6, 2021, insurrection, 38 Democratic members of Congress urged the U.S Judicial Conference to allow Trump’s federal trials to be televised.

Be careful what you wish for, Democrats. Trump lawyer John Lauro said he would “love to see” his client’s January 6 trial televised. Lauro must know that Trump is a master at manipulating the media and a televised trial could put undue pressure on jurors to acquit him.

It’s one thing to televise the proceedings of the House of Representatives Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol; it’s quite another to broadcast Trump’s criminal trials.

These two proceedings have very different functions. The January 6 Committee hearings were designed to provide the viewing public with information about Trump’s actions leading to the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6. The purpose of a criminal trial is for a jury to examine the evidence and decide whether Trump is guilty or innocent of the charges; it is not to educate the public.

When everyone sees the evidence, they won't want the country to see them as biased idiots.

Having said that, I agree that televising the trial would turn it into a circus.

In order to manipulate the media, he’d have to testify. If there is anyone in the world who should never testify in his own defense, it’s that asshole. I’m not worried.

1) This is the most significant case of this century that will define the path of this country for generations.

2) Count 4 is him depriving the rights of voters. We can’t all be in the courtroom.

Needs to be televised.

easily solved. No camera on Trump, lawyers, jury, etc. If he isn't seen or heard, he can only cause minimal problems. If it's not televised, he can come out of the courtroom and say anything he wants i.e. lies ~ very few people would read the transcripts. Do you want what happened in the courtroom to be screened through the media?

Future generations will ask whether TFG was treated fairly. With video, there is no way to dispute the fairness of the proceedings.

I think the C-SPAN model for televising Congressional proceedings would work reasonably well. One camera, taking in the proceedings at the rostrum. Yes, the lawyers for AnusMouth will play for the cameras, but the BS they spew would be pretty discernible.

Think Nuremberg......

His only chance to talk would be on the stand, and Trump doesn’t have guts enough to testify; the prosecutors would bury him.

Tue Aug 8, 2023, 07:11 PM

It was a shit show. The judge, Ito, had nearly no control over the courtroom.

The Defendant’s lawyers performed for the cameras and encouraged witnesses to do the same.

The trial lasted a year and demonstrated incompetence by the prosecutors and the court.

Don’t feed Trump’s ego. Do NOT televise his trials.

Trump said the same thing.

They are posturing. They are saying the exact opposite of what they want so they can have trial-by-media.

They don't want the actual trial televised.

They only want their sound bites to be public.

... then all we'll get are outraged, deranged, fake news rantings from Chump-humping "journalists" EVERY SINGLE DAY. America needs to see this trial (in Washington) and digest the daily events in real-time.

I watched the Watergate hearings every day, and I watched the OJ Simpson trial almost every day. I saw almost all of the House Select Committee's January 6th hearings. It's possible to show a real legal proceedings (or daily televised synopses) without invoking riots in America.

In the absence of truthful real-time reportage, I believe riots will take place. Because ... Faux Noise.
