(14,559 posts)suggests placing the subject off center, at one of the four points where dividing the image in thirds both horizontally and vertically intersesect to allow the eye to explore the rest of the picture.
Do a search on 'rule of thirds' and you'll find lots of info.

I ended up looking at them all three times. I went with the one that had instantly impacted me: Skimming the Water....

(1,576 posts)I like how the rail, fishing pole, lamp posts and where the water meets the sand divide the entire photo into different areas of interest.
And of course with the gull as the center of focus.

(3,529 posts)I learned the current theme is "Rule of Thirds".
btw - my vote changed after I learned the theme.

(14,605 posts)Though...well, I like them all for different reasons.
The three birds connect us with all life on the planet.
The moon and Milky Way with arch...both really well done.
Irony...well the image says it all.
Grief is apropos at this moment. All of us are in grief.
Lighthouse and the gnarled tree connect land and sea. Trees are a miracle anyway - Joyce Kilmer says it all.
Expanse reminds us all of the nobleness to which we can aspire if we look up from grubbing for money.
This just blew me away.
Thank you SO much for posting these.

(3,943 posts)Such great pictures. Years ago I invested in a nice Cannon camera with some different lenses. I tried to get into photography as a hobby. I took a ton of pictures but I never had the eye (as I call it). I've always wished I was able to produce pictures like this. I view it like art. Artists create such great stuff. Photography is like that. I just don't have it.
