I think Johnson will win on this vote
The complete devolution of the GOP into the party of trump will have been completed
This is how democracy dies. To thunderous applause

(1,654 posts)You're right. McCarthy is more of a Trump guy out of fear and convenience, not principle. Which kind of goes without saying, since McCarthy seems to have no principles.
In any case, the "easy" part is getting a speaker. The hard part is actually legislating. I'm worried how these clowns are going to try and write a budget.

(1,836 posts)I don't think this is any worse than Jordan or Emmer. McCarthy has the lowest "conservative score" of all the private vote winners in this congress, if we'd wanted to avoid a conservative-conservative then we wouldn't have voted to oust him. The end result though, was always going to be a republican. Because I have a personal loathing for Jordan, anyone but Jordan is a small victory to me.

(35,446 posts)And stupidly, he armed his opponents to remove him if/when he didn't give them what they wanted. Kevin thought that the Democrats would save them, but instead of working with the Dems, he showed us his ass. So, fuck Kevin McCarthy.

(8,685 posts)McCarthy was bad but he did work with us to get debt ceiling passed and extension of the budget.

My only (forlorn) hope is that after all of this shitshow, they lose any kind of meaningful majority in the upcoming elections. Not optimistic about that, (its about as likely as Jeffires being confirmed for speaker) but Ive got to have something to hope for.

(3,435 posts)They don't control the Senate or the White House. An election is just a year away. If they shut down the government, they will get the flack for it.

(1,607 posts)There are no good choices who could win. And there will be no perceptible difference between Johnson as speaker and McCarthy before him, except Johnson won't have the sway/connections with donors and the GOP machinery that the former speaker had, which will not help them in '24. The devolution of the GOP to this was inevitable and unsurprising.

2. National ban on abortion
3. Revamping/Defunding Social Security and Medicaid/Medicare
4. Some sort of ban on the LGBT community
5. Attempt to defund the DOJ
6. Pass a draconian budget bill that has no chance of passing the Senate and then try to blame the Democrats for the government shutdown.
I could list more but the crazies are fully in charge now in the house and hopefully America will see them for who they are.
Personally I am only worried about the budget as that directly impacts people's daily lives and you now have a bunch of hostage takers in charge.
On a different note how quickly will Kevin McCarthy be kicked out of the speakers office. My bet is by 5pm this evening. Guarantee you Matt Gaetz will film the whole thing.
