Bumpstock trial - SCOTUS

Listened to a bit of the trial on C-Span this morning. Impression is, has there ever been a more inane argument ever presented to a superior court by a defendant's council??

The (il)logical contortions from the defense attorney were truly something to behold. Thankfully, it seemed none of the court's justices seemed impressed at all and were more incredulous than anything else.

Why did the court even agree to hear the case to begin with?
