I think he decided to run again because he knew Trump would be the GOP nominee.
Biden ran in 2020 because he saw Trump as a grave threat and thought he had the best chance of beating him.
And his assessment proved to be right. I don't think it is ego, but he has beaten Trump before and he also has the advantage of incumbency, which is usually an advantage.
My belief is if Trump had been stopped from running, whether by the GOP, Justice or his failing health, Biden might well have stepped aside for another Democrat.
Biden is a smart, seasoned politician, and I think he has made a strategic judgement.

(3,035 posts)Have been unscientifically polling this with friends and folks I end up in political conversations with....the wizened hands at the barber shop, garage and bars. I have not had one person push back on the notion of a single six year Presidential term and pretty much universal thought for some sort of limits on Congress although debate of total time is wide ranging although some compromise/consensus around 12 years. I know the chances of ever making the Constitutional change needed is about 8 times worse than me winning the next big Powerball drawing but find it interesting that so many folks are open to it. And I also don't dismiss the view that more experience legislating is not the worse thing. Thank you Nancy Pelosi!

(3,035 posts)...would we regret having had a singular six year term for President? Trump is certainly clear and notable. Nixon, possibly. but he solved that for us. I'd take that risk vs. the division and risk we now face with Trump possibly getting 4 more years more dangerous and erratic than ever.

(588 posts)The repugs and the press have unfairly blamed Joe for so much that actually isn't his fault, especially inflation and problems at the border. In my view someone who doesn't have this "baggage" would have a better chance.

(14,825 posts)The pulpit and exposure it provides is immense. The ability to turn words into action, and translate ideas into impact can't be replaced on the campaign trail.
Another dem candidate wouldn't have that advantage, and in essence would be running against a near incumbent in trump. He in amny ways is treated that way by the media, and certainly by the gop house.
So yes, Joe is the best dem candidate we could field. Both because of WHO he is, as well as where he is and the great job he is doing.
