Lt. Gov. Dan Patricks fantasy of abolishing property taxes would set the state up for financial failure and end public education as we know it by placing a greater burden on low- and medium-income Texans.
The most powerful man in Texas politics wants you to believe hes looking out for homeowners, but theres always an unacknowledged goal for significant initiatives like this one. You need only look at who deposited $3 million in Patricks campaign account and who gave the record $6 million donation to Gov. Greg Abbott to boost private religious schools.
As lieutenant governor, Patrick appoints the leaders of Senate committees, sets their agendas and decides whether a piece of legislation gets a vote. Patrick also rewards senators who appease him and punishes those who dont with his fat campaign war chest.
Last week, the lite guv ordered the Senate Finance Committee to determine the effect on other state programs if general revenue were used to fully replace school property taxes, particularly during economic downturns.

(16,251 posts)I understand that schools would be affected. Maybe add 2 cents to the sales tax and have them go directly to education? I just hate seeing people who worked their whole lives lose their paid off homes. Happens to often.

(1,191 posts)Texas will always find a way to screw the low income, and the poor.
How often do low income people in Texas lose their homes, because they can't afford to pay property taxes? What kind of numbers are you talking about?
How many low income people in Texas actually own their own homes?
How many schools would be shut down and how many low income students and their families would that affected?
It comes down to the numbers, after all is said and done!

(1,890 posts)The whole party is basically against education. Those without an education will have no choice but to work for low wages, and be told that God wants them to vote for Rethuglicans. That knowledge is evil.

(16,966 posts)Most likely many poor Texans barely make enough to pay rent. Rental Facility owners pay Property taxes. What a windfall that would be for them.

(20,262 posts)I've been scoping out apartments here in Houston and in Albuquerque and there are a lot of vacancies. People with spare rooms are renting them out. Others have decided to live in their vehicles. I've considered it myself. I'm glad I'm single. I can't imagine being a renter with a family.

(1,139 posts)to give to the rich. Rich people can have more money than they could spend in 10 lifetimes and it's never enough. Once they've eliminated all taxes on the rich and all public services, they'll charge rent for poor people to enter a grocery store.
I can't imagine the contempt with which they must hold the not-rich. If compassion is not possible, could they at least notice that someone has to do all the work they don't want to do to have their luxurious lifestyles? Do they hate the people who serve them and labor for them? I wonder what that is like. I'm guessing not as nice as the experience of helping people. But they will never know.

(16,966 posts)It would not surprise me if hundreds of thousands, if not millions, leave the state. Do these high and mighty rich Texans think that Texans are going to do the shit jobs for little pay?

(8,827 posts)Maybe Texas will do the same. Both states are pulling in billions from the relaxing of oil & gas regulations. Both states are getting more polluted too .
Texas is #1 and NM is #2 in oil production in US. Forbes - In Texas in 2022, the oil and natural gas industry paid almost $25 billion in state and local taxes and state royalties, by far the largest ever - the previous high was $16 billion
After NM paid all its bills last yr it still had a billion to invest for the future. What I dont get is why is most of the oil produced by these 2 states getting exported according to Forbes.
