Emphasis mine.
In an interview on the Verges Decoder podcast published Monday, Dropbox CEO Drew Houston (a.k.a. "DHH" among techies) mounted a zealous argument for the importance of AI while defending his companys 500-worker layoff in April 2023. The two things are linked, he said, noting that Dropboxs layoff was largely aimed at freeing up cash to hire more engineers who are skilled in AI.
We couldnt make the math work with the way that we were structured, Houston said during the podcast. So we had to make a really tough decision to let go of a lot of people and then make room for the investments in AI and [Dropbox] Dash and all the stuff that we wanted to ultimately make the company successful. But its brutal.
AI researchers have made huge technological leaps in recent years, but fears of overhype are beginning to bubble up at large companies like Microsoft, the Information reported in March. Houston had no such qualms in the interview with Verge Editor-in-Chief Nilay Patel. After explaining the layoffs, the file-hosting services CEO called AI more important than PC, cloud, mobile, or the internet and likened it to fire or electricity or the industrial revolution.
The very definition of hype!
And with the insane power demands that AI makes, who or what is next to be sacrificed?

Folks, don't store your unencrypted files in the cloud. That includes your photos, which Google and others scrape for data.

I'm a big MS software user including Windows, Office, and Visual Studio. It's all stored on my computer. They get nothing from me.

(23,959 posts)Even assuming their decisions are made in good faith for shareholders, the technology is still tremendously immature. Such companies are firing the very people needed to train and maintain such systems. The overwhelming hype over AI seems to have dazzled many to the point of putting toddler-level systems in the middle of business flows. Well, it won't be the first time unready technology has been applied to the detriment of those involved.

(I had to use cloud tech almost since its inception as I worked remotely since the early 2000s).
