Say you have a bottle of milk that expires in 3 days.
Say another person can't afford the price of milk but desperately needs it.
Say I come in, buy you a new bottle of milk and give your bottle to the other person, who then can at least get 3 days worth of milk, which is better than no milk at all.
And you in turn have new milk.
That's all that's happening with Ukraine. As we're not engaged in any large scale conflict at the moment, we have stockpiles of weapons that are not being used. Some of it will cease being effective after a while.
But Ukraine needs it literally at this moment, and it will certainly be used if sent there.
So we are ordering production of new weaponry on our own end, giving Ukraine our old ones when they are replaced. It's a win-win.
So if anyone goes off on Ukraine as if we're just giving them a giant blank check for them to spend on luxury homes and cars and whatever--or if they're giving sob stories about the Maui wildfires--this is how to explain it best.
