"SNIP.............
Lawmakers on a Louisiana House committee voted Thursday to repeal a law requiring employers to give child workers lunch breaks and to slash unemployment benefits part of a Republican-backed push to roll back regulations on companies and reduce aid for injured and unemployed workers, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

I hope someone shares this with the Teamsters who seem to be about to endorse Trump and Republicans.

(15,908 posts)But they have to by law. Its unpaid and either need or want the additional money. If they take away the requirements, then the teen can decide on their own. Seems reasonable and fair. But you have to work with teens to understand.

(3,338 posts)As a teen back in the day, I needed a break. Hours on my feet flipping burgers was exhausting.
As a mother of now grown adults, they needed breaks, too. Yes, they were unpaid breaks, but they appreciated them.

(12,667 posts)But they crash hard and suddenly if they don't. I've seen it happen too many times with my friends when going to high school, the kidlet and her friends, and now with the grandkids. Same with the 18 - 20 age group; I've seen too many get a bad case of the foggy floats at the end of a work day, and that can be deadly working in industrial or high stress environments.
Over the summer it might not be a big deal for teens who will be sleeping in as much as possible anyway, but on school nights? And not giving them growing 16 and 17 year olds, a chance to eat when they're on the job? Really?
Small town plantation owner class is behind this, guaranteed. They don't care about poor folk's kids; they're probably just more than a bit miffed they can't just whoop those lazy kids for slacking and not making specious production goals by the end of the day - and this is one way they can ease that frustration
"What? They're only working four or five hours a shift; why should they get a break like my hard working eight hours shift workers do?"

(12,667 posts)That's typical for most child labor; in fact, my 12 year old granddaughter is working a side money hustle on her own after school with her friends, and we really need to watch her hours, especially since she's getting closer to a level past "hobby" she (we) will need to get a business license to start selling outside her circle of schoolmates.
If she had her druthers, she would ignore homework altogether to make her products and set up small sales venues already. Until she finds it's even harder and not as fun to market one's own work to a wider general customer base, especially when not yet quite understanding finance, good business practices and all the laws governing sales businesses.
And the sheer number of hours it takes to make enough of her product to break even, even if all she's doing is swap meets or community markets.
