Trump reportedly 'fuming' after Judge Merchan made him sit 'like a man addressing his dog'

As the 45th president of the United States, Donald Trump isn't used to being reminded that he's now a criminal defendant. He got one stark reminder from Judge Juan Merchan on Friday, according to a new report.

The Daily Beast's Jose Pagliery reported that during Friday's jury selection, Merchan had to tell Trump to sit down after he abruptly stood up before the judge finished his sentence. Merchan had just gotten through more than an hour of back-and-forth arguments with both the prosecution and the defense about a contempt hearing scheduled for next week, where Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is alleging that Trump has repeatedly violated the court's gag order.

"Merchan turned his face to the former president and said in a firm voice: 'Sir, can you please have a seat,'" Pagliery wrote. "His long, black robes dangled from beneath his right hand as he waved it down, like a man addressing his dog." Pagliery, who was present during the hearing, wrote that Trump then "went and plopped straight back down into his maroon leather chair at the defense table—and remained for another minute, fuming as the judge gathered his paperwork and strolled toward his chambers."

Merchan's contempt hearing will be held early next week. Bragg's office asking for the maximum allowable fine of $1,000 for each specific violation of the gag order meant to prevent Trump from attacking witnesses, court staff and their families. They also want Trump to be ordered to delete posts to his Truth Social platform attacking witnesses like Michael Cohen — Trump's longtime former personal attorney and fixer — and adult film star and producer Stormy Daniels.

The Daily Beast can do better than use its 1A rights to indirectly denigrate a justice conducting the first trial in US history of a former president who's now a criminal defendant.

"Sir, please have a seat." is not disrespectful. It was actually very polite given that the judge is completely in charge in the court room.

I learned this when I randomly met Mr. Clinton one fine spring afternoon on The Bowery; when I called him "Mr. President" he chuckled and corrected me, "Oh no, I'm just Mr. Clinton now…" with a slightly exaggerated sad expression.

That was a fun day.

(a) Motion To Determine Competency of Defendant.—
At any time after the commencement of a prosecution for an offense and prior to the sentencing of the defendant, or at any time after the commencement of probation or supervised release and prior to the completion of the sentence, the defendant or the attorney for the Government may file a motion for a hearing to determine the mental competency of the defendant. The court shall grant the motion, or shall order such a hearing on its own motion, if there is reasonable cause to believe that the defendant may presently be suffering from a mental disease or defect rendering him mentally incompetent to the extent that he is unable to understand the nature and consequences of the proceedings against him or to assist properly in his defense.
(b) Psychiatric or Psychological Examination and Report.—
Prior to the date of the hearing, the court may order that a psychiatric or psychological examination of the defendant be conducted, and that a psychiatric or psychological report be filed with the court, pursuant to the provisions of section 4247(b) and (c).

As they take whiffs of his stench each day of the trial.

Jonathan Capehart, in for Lawrence O'Donnell last night said something to this effect, "Donald Trump is on trial. The courtroom will be his prison for the coming weeks. We and the whole world will be watching how he behaves."

Jonathan Capehart has a point there. It will be reported how he reacts to the witnesses and testimonies. It will get back to Joe Biden as well. Voters will see that this is a broken and defeated man, done in by his big mouth and the LIES that have driven him all these years.

Makes me wonder how enthused come July when the RNC throws their big and expensive party for him with the money they do not have. I sure hope their shares in DjT are worth $1 each by then.

TSF may have been elected the 45th POTUS, but he did the title and position NO HONOR. He is worthless.

Being a former, he is Mr. Trump. Joe Biden IS Mr. President. He does the title and position of such, an HONOR.

DEMANDING to be called a title one no longer holds is disrespectful, for there is only ONE President at a time. Perhaps Judge Merchan will remind the Defense Attorneys that in his courtroom, the criminal defendant will be referred to as " Mr. Trump" and nothing more. That is the reality of the current situation.

That will make TSF's day.

Guess what? Donny was indicted by a grand jury, has 44 felony counts, and is only out because he posted bail.
The trial has even really started and Dump has a contempt charge against him and the judge has had to reprimand
him in court for his behavior. What is he going to be like once Alvin Bragg starts to lay out his case against him
and the witnesses start to testify? I would not be surprised if he doesn’t make the whole 2 months.

This has to be and will be complete torture on Trump. Good.
