(10,303 posts)I dont really get why some Dems are hesitant about him and not because of his age. I was talking to a friend last night and was surprised at her reluctance. But she hates trump so shes firmly in Joes camp.

(3,688 posts)Many a time as a kid our breakfast table was graced with the presence of King Vitamin. It was one of the few cereals my parents and I agreed on. To me it tasted just as sugary as the other kid-focused cereals, but hey, they bought it.

(33,587 posts)...Presidents.
Many of the greatest Presidents become so because they succeed Presidential disasters. This was certainly true of Lincoln (Pierce and then Buchanan) and of FDR (Harding, Coolidge, Hoover). Grant succeeded Andrew Johnson.
On this score, Joe has them all beat, having succeeded the worst President ever, the only person horrible enough to bump Buchanan out of the bottom.
Lincoln in ordinary times might have been just an average or below average President, but in his times, he was far and away the greatest in my view.
President Biden has risen to the challenge that has saved the country many times, to our surprising good fortune, a great President following a horrible President.

(15,448 posts)...like the Japanese interment to deal with. That's sort of how I think about Biden and Gaza right now. I still think Biden is a great President even though I wish he'd be tougher on Israel now.

(665 posts)... fail to take into account the limits of what the president can do to influence the leaders of other countries, even those that receive the staggering sums in aid that Israel enjoys. Israel is not a state, it is not a territory, it has few, if any, strings attached to the ten billion or so it receives, and the president has limited influence over how those monies are spent. I am very sympathetic to the plight of the Palestinian people; they are victims of Hamas, too and should not be mindlessly conjoined to Hamas, any more than all Israelis should be lumped in with a sociopath like Netanyahu.
Biden is doing all he can to rein in Netanyahu's malevolent excesses, but to blame him for what he cannot legally do reflects, at best, a tenuous grasp of the diplomatic realities he faces.
I know there are ignorant fools out there who will refuse to vote for him for just the reasons you elucidated, but I implore them to do their homework before they go off on him.
I was born during the first Truman administration, so, as I'm fond of saying, I've seen some shit. I can think of no one I'd rather see piloting the ship of state through the perilous waters in which we find ourselves right now. None could do it better. None.

(6,966 posts)They also have no idea of what potential consequencves might be if a President made the wrong choice of what he or she CAN do. Abandoning a long time ally without haveing done one's damnedest to mend the fences would create a situation where no other nation would ever trust that nation again.
But,, yeah, people don't get it because foreign policy is boring.

(52,503 posts)Had the south not seceded, more than likely Lincoln would have been just another president in the long line until a civil war finally happened.
He had a hard enough time ending slavery even with the south largely defeated after their betrayal of the union.
But they did seceded and Lincoln rose to the occasion, as fdr rose to face the great contraction and wwii.

Obamacare is probably the single biggest accomplishment by a president during my lifetime, but Biden's ushering us out of the pandemic and achieving what he has with such slim majorities, I can see the case being made for him as well.
Just imagine what he could have done with a filibuster-proof Senate and a large majority in the House...

(12,515 posts)Let's start here.
It's mid 2000's and I'm traveling a lot for work. Global travel... I was the company expert on ONE piece of machinery found in most every one of our facilities in the world. I spent time in China, lots of time in China.
For years I'd wear an Adidas jersey when I was out and about, maybe an Olympic soccer jersey, maybe Bundesliga.
Anything to avoid being ID'd as American.
Otherwise I'd have to discuss asshole.
I don't want this to turn into an essay but I'll summarize.
The campaign was exhilarating, the victory(ies) were the greatest joy of my life (one of)
And we could talk about the USA again overseas... where EVERYONE asked me about our young dynamic black President.
In conclusion, he was the first and only POTUS I CAN RELATE TO.
My age, my generation, my background... he looks and speaks like the guys I WORKED WITH.
thx for asking.
EDIT: I could add so much more. The way he handled himself and respected the White House and his position. The way he treated others. The way he made people FEEL. His cool as the other side of the pillow demeanor. I slept every night knowing that everything was OK. Some criticized him for being completely inoffensive, a pure class act.
That's not to mention his accomplishments starting with the recovery from 2008 and I'd argue this was tougher than COVID because of politics... and the single accomplishment of the ACA is the greatest since FDR.
P.S. just realized you might not have really been interested in my thoughts, just trying to throw shade... I hope not.

(375 posts)Not going to lie.. Doesn't mean I am not voting for him, but I totally disagree with his stance on Israel and he continuing to send them money to commit genocide on civilians.
I think he has been great with Ukraine..
At home here, I wish he a bit better on climate change, and I do disagree with TikTok ban, but I am come to my sense that it won't be banned in the US. It will take years to go through all the courts.
But he has done great, people who have ripped him for inflation don't have a clue. Joe has been great for the economy and the only President that was better was Clinton IMO.

(1,358 posts)who is/was the best president ever. I'd prefer to believe that there were several GREAT presidents in that they were the right men for the right time.
Religious fundamentalist often attribute things happening to God's will, though usually only when shit happens to someone else. And there are some who say everything happens for a reason.
So if one were to follow that precept, one might argue that Biden was/is the right man for the right time. That Biden's presidency happened for a reason, and that reason was to stop America's falling to Trump and MAGA'S march to fascism under his authoritarian dictatorship.
...happened because WE recognized Trump and MAGA'S existential threat to democracy, and what was at stake.
Because we stuck together, and ROSE to the occasion.
Conversely, (and applying the same rationale) one might argue that a Trump/MAGA victory this November would be for a reason too. To teach us a lesson. The CONSEQUENCES, no doubt, to be bitter and apocalyptic.
That is, assuming things happen for a reason.
Some don't seem to realize how bad it could get under a Trump/MAGA regime. Too much talk of petty differences for my druthers.
I pray we never have to learn.
