It is a broken hip with a dislocated socket.
My sister said that surgery will take place a day or two, too much swelling.
I guess my mom laid on the floor for about 40 mins before the rescue squad arrived. Its a volunteer fire department.

(24,615 posts)to recover when the hip is broken during trauma, plus she must have been very stressed when it took a long time for the emergency crew to reach her. I hope she does well with surgery and therapy. My mother had one hip replaced three times, and it was always successful. Her surgeons credited her positive attitude along with doing exactly what she was directed to by her therapist. Anything you can do to keep her spirits up will be a big help.

(3,803 posts)She fell and broke her hip. Surgeon put a pin in it, she was put in a rehab facility, then she was on her way. I wish the same outcome for your mom.

(17,335 posts)It hasnt bothered him at all since he healed. Since it was during the pandemic I chose to skip rehab and instead have the physical and occupational therapists come to our home masked. For the first month I rented a hospital bed so it was easier for him to get in and out of it and per the medical supply, for hip and back surgery it was best to have a very firm mattress. After the first week he really wanted to try sleeping in our bed which is a firm mattress but not as firm as the hospital bed. He tried it and only lasted 5-10 minutes before the pain made him return to the hospital bed. Then after 3 or so weeks he tried again and made it all night comfortably. I also got a shower chair so he didnt have to stand along with a getting a hand held shower adapter. He did have a lot of pain and couldnt take opiates as they make him very wacky.
If it werent for his short term memory problems and it was today with Covid vaccines, Id probably go with rehab for a couple of weeks and evaluate afterwards if a hospital bed would help him.
Sending good vibes.

(1,544 posts)I'm very sorry to hear about your mother's accident and injury; she's probably in a lot of pain and is looking at a lengthy recovery. I know you, family, and friends will stay with her - she's going to need a lot of help.
I'm a long-time EMT on a volunteer rescue squad in a rural VA county.
37% of our county's population are over 65, most well over 65.
One-third of our calls are for falls and the patient is always over 65.
Nationwide, falls -- mostly in the home -- are the biggest cause of injury or death for people over 65.
When we go for a fall, we first check out the patient for broken bones, bleeding, and the like, then start treatment as required. The next step is to ask the patient "Why did you fall?" It's not unusual for a patient to respond negatively -- "Why do you need to know that?" BECAUSE: If you tripped over the cat and fell, or got your feet tangled up in a throw rug, that's one thing. But if you blacked out, don't remember falling, felt dizzy and waked up on the floor -- anything like that could mean you have something cerebral going on -- onset of a stroke; possible bleed in the brain (which can be fatal within minutes); or a similar dangerous condition. We need to know why you fell because the reason for the fall could point to a serious condition that needs immediate diagnosis and treatment.
