April 24 (Reuters) - About 44 million Americans live in cities or counties that received a failing grade for air quality, which has deteriorated to its worst in 25 years across a swath of the U.S., in part because of wildfires, a report released on Wednesday found.

The American Lung Association's annual "State of the Air" report said cities with the poorest quality air are concentrated in the West, including Los Angeles and San Bernardino in California and Phoenix, Arizona.

The report was based on 2022 data - the most recent available - collected through thousands of air quality monitors set up by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Despite the deterioration in some areas, air quality in the U.S. is far better than it was before the Clean Air Act was passed in 1970, Pruitt said. Gone are the days where the Los Angeles skyline was often obscured by smog.

to beginning of rain the last 4 Summers. The smoke flows down the river canyons (my case lower Klamath) like water as heavier.

Summer 2024 looked out front door to see a rainbird sprinkler There were house lays, porta-tanks, equipment caches, and sprinklers surrounding the small subdivision. There were crews from all over the USA parked staged at base of my driveway for almost two months while in evacuation warning area.

Had one air purifier from previous years. The local Indian Health Service clinic gave air purifiers to most seniors. There is a warning light that varies from blue to red (hazardous). Spent over a month with both purifiers and the fancy purifier pegged to red. Had vehicle packed in what would take but what actually occurred was thought leaving but did not feel safe as a driver because of dizzy from the smoke. Friends at my nearest safe zone, an hour drive distant, were evacuated.

At the moment, there is a pollen warning (from Douglas-fir and various oaks). There is yellow pollen building up in small drifts on obstacles.
