(11,744 posts)People overuse "stupid" or ignorant as an explanation too often, especially for the leadership of the Conservative movement. Donald Trump is not very academically intelligent. He has gotten by on his money and his instinct. He is a good con, able to stoke the emotions of ignorant people, which is the base of the Republican party.
The Conservatives at the Federalist Society, who sought out these Supreme Court Justices, are not stupid. Neither are the Justices they selected. Perhaps they aren't as legally talented as say, Katanji Brown Jackson, but they aren't ignorant or stupid. They are as you astutely said, CORRUPT. They say they are "Constitutionalists" but they are "Whatever puts my ideology into power...ists".
People REALLY need to understand that Conservatives CANNOT be truthful about their worldview. They cannot say how they see the "ideal society" because it involves some structure akin to absolute monarchy, from which the ideology, not the traits of Conservatism were born. This means a very tiny group of people COMPLETELY in charge of all aspects of society. People don't remember because by the time the late 1700's rolled around, kings and queens had either been made largely bound by some kind of Constitution, or they were losing their heads, literally, by the early 20th century any kind of functioning monarchical government was largely obsolete. Conservatives HATED that. They think equality and equitable distribution of wealth is PROFANE and a sin against nature.
I have seen some on DU argue that we need a stable Conservative party to keep balance. I don't think that they understand that Conservatism stands directly opposed to true democracy and any kind of movement toward people within the lower SES of society, having even "just enough" to get by. There will NEVER be balance as long as Conservatism as an ideology, has power. There will always be group of people who believe they are "naturally" better and deserve to be protected by the law, but not bound by it, while others are bound by the law and not protected by it, as Galbraith said.
