(This from March, but the first I’ve heard of it.)

Two chemicals found in common household products like disinfectants and furniture may play a role in the development of neurological disorders like autism and multiple sclerosis, according to a new study, adding to previous research that found the chemicals may be detrimental to human health.

The researchers examined over 1,800 common household chemicals—which they believe lacked research on their potential link to brain health—and discovered two that may have a negative effect on brain health: quaternary ammonium compounds (also called “quats” or QACs) and organophosphate flame retardants, according to the new study published Monday in Nature Neuroscience.

Research shows disrupted oligodendrocytes production is tied to neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis and autism, so the study researchers believe they’ve uncovered a “previously unrecognized risk factor for neurological disease,” Paul Tesar, study author and a director at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, said in a statement.

When all of my feline companions were still with me, I thought that the Fresh Step cat litter was the best of the market as far as quality, price and durability.

I'm not sure when I noticed but Febreze is added to this particular cat litter. Febreze has carcinogenic and neurotoxic chemicals in it.

It took me awhile, but I found another quality and durable cat litter that didn't contain these chemicals.

I've lost one feline to carcinoma cancer and another feline to lymphoma cancer, so I had to keep a watchful eye on the products that I was purchasing for them.

that demonstrates the many health conditions plaquing our society. I urge all to do your own searching into publications such as the Environmental Health Perspectives (published by NIH) and other groups. The information about the effects of certain chemicals are known but the information stops. This is when industries fight to have testing stopped and regulations stopped on the chemicals. They label research and those with concerns as crazy. They have been successful for decades.

Chemicals are invisible and not using them is inconvenient. Our inattention has resulted in us accepting as normal, many children being born with autism and horrible conditions such as cancer, MS, and a host of neurological conditions. We have to do better.
