In my youth, the stereotype was that the "University of Spoiled Children" was filled with rich white LA brats who didn't care about anything beyond their own entitled lives. A couple visits to campus in the late '80s confirmed this view, at least in my eyes. My university had many large anti-apartheid protest at the time, which seemed to mystify the frat bro-types I encountered at SC. They didn't even know what apartheid was, much less the term "divestment." But, it seems that times have changed, and many Trojans have broadened their perspective on the world.

[Yes, I know I just engaged in generalizations.]

but I think you’re right about Arizona State attracting a lot of those types of kids.

Columbia isn't cheap either.... it's an Ivy League school...

The privileged are far better positioned to get outraged over a subject and decide they want to burn it all down.

and the brutal leveling of Gaza by Netanyahu and the IDF seems like a pretty damn good reason to protest, IMO. Talk about burning everything down.

If it’s wrong for Russia to invade Ukraine shoot and bomb Ukrainians, and it’s wrong for Hamas to attack, murder, rape, etc. Israelis, then it’s also wrong for Israel to commit genocide. This wasn’t a strategy to recover hostages. This was a strategy to wipe Gaza and Gazans off the map so Israel can take over.

Gazans are just as human as Israelis and Ukrainians.

USC has changed since the 80s. At least some of the students there are looking beyond their own bubbles and seeing at one of the worst injustices in decades and deciding to speak out. Good for them.

some places just have smaller individual ceremonies for the departments where you hand them a card with your name on it and they read the card, they don't read cards at the larger ceremonies

Then the smaller ones for individual colleges. At any rate, that’s how Oklahoma does it (my PhD Alma mater): huge thing to recognise the graduating PhDs by name and all graduates in general, smaller ceremonies the next day or two for individual schools.
