In 1952, as a Republican candidate for vice-president, Richard Nixon famously stirred criticism by admitting receiving a dog, Checkers, as a political gift.

In 2012, as the Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney was pilloried for tying a dog, Seamus, to the roof of the family car for a cross-country trip.

But in 2024 Kristi Noem, a strong contender to be named running mate to Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, has managed to go one further – by admitting killing a dog of her own.

“Cricket was a wirehair pointer, about 14 months old,” the South Dakota governor writes in a new book, adding that the dog, a female, had an “aggressive personality” and needed to be trained to be used for hunting pheasant.

Sounds like she killed the dog, enjoyed it, and so found another creature to kill. Why would she write about this?

I was thinking more along of the lines of, "we rugged individualists know that sometimes you have to put down your own dog, but those bleeding heart liberals don't get it. This will really piss them off"

I don't mean to suggest that her supporters are dysfunctional thinkers in just one way, though. I'm sure they're dyfunctional in many different ways.

she looked around for something else to kill. "Oh, yeah, the bad goat! I'll shoot him too!"
She mentions that there were workers around who were "startled" to see her kill two animals. I'll bet they were.
Oh, and then her kids got off the schoolbus and were looking around for the dog.

She's really weird. She says it was the dog who was "untrainable." Cough.

Ever see that footage of him trying to pose with an eagle for a photo? He looks like a complete wimp in his open fear of the animal.

Like most bullies, he is essentially a coward at heart.

Decades with hunting- and bird-dogs, and the number I've killed because they were chicken-sharp or had too much prey drive is ZERO. Puppies need slow exposure to birds, and bird-scent.

She killed a puppy because she was lazy at training bird dogs, not because it was a bad dog.

Not every dog is for the field, but 99.9% of them are trainable or re-homeable. We have one now who was never going in the field, but I didn't kill her. She's sleeping on the couch.

You down old dogs, hurt dogs, and sick dogs humanely, not by shooting them and tossing them in a gravel pit.

Unsporting and deliberately cruel...but she wrote this to prove the cruelty is the point.

Seeing people like Trump and Noem in positions of power bothers me a great deal, but not as much as knowing that nearly half of American voters think that's just fine. Trump and Noem will go away, eventually, but not that segment of American society.
