Pretty please read to the end of the quote.
"I think that everyone has a responsibility, at least those of us who love this country and love Democracy to do everything that they can in their power to ensure the future of our Democracy and right now I think the biggest threat is donald trump in a second trump presidency. That being said, I thought maybe naïvely that being a former trump supporter, a police officer, a white guy that maybe I could communicate with some other trump supporters as to why, you know, how I was bamboozled so to speak, lied to by the former president, but unfortunately their, I guess youd say messaging apparatus is strong enough to withstand even my country ass."
I think it's important, one because he identifies himself as a former trump supporter which I've never heard him do before in TV interviews. He also verbalizes the relevance of race.

(26,725 posts)that very strongly implied that he'd voted for Trump, though he didn't actually state it outright.
He's evidence that they're not all bad people and that they are capable of change, though usually not unless they directly experience a seriously negative consequence.
I do know that many of the people who worked in his previous administration saw directly how awful he is, and are now among his biggest opponents. Those were mostly "normal" Republicans though; people who didn't actually want a dictatorship or a regime that was aligned with the Kremlin. Still people who needed to directly experience his awfulness in order to turn against him.
The real question is, how do you reach the other ones who are relatively normal and decent people, because I know that they must be there.

(1,669 posts)Now that I've heard him admit he voted for trermp in 2016. I read that a lot of what changed his mind in 2020 is that trermp's "China virus" BS. Fanone has daughters who are Asian and was deeply disgusted. Like you said, not all bad people, but damn! How thick do you have to be to give a verified conman and cheat a shot at the Oval.

(260 posts)They are running a very big budget ad campaign against Trump. And they are Republicans.
I'm sure they would love to have him as part of their group.

(1,669 posts)RVAT a little help from a somewhat celebrity (white) cop would help. I'm just not sure if he has considered himself a Republican or an independent. Then again, I don't know if it matters.
Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
